If they are serious about this we will see the first use of nukes in combat since WW2.
What hasn’t quite sunk in yet for Putin is that NATO will respond militarily even if the strikes are limited to Ukraine. Something like that cannot go unanswered. The initial response would not be nuclear but would likely start with a warning to remove all remaining nuclear weapons from the immediate theater or they will be forcibly destroyed or removed. NATO would likely try to shoot down such missile if they have the chance as the stakes are too high. I wouldn’t rule out a formal permanent blockade of the Black Sea either by NATO. This would be some serious shit and if Putin decides to escalate further from this it’s all over. No going back then. If NATO leadership is smart they already communicated this clearly through back channels.

That is certainly a concern. But only if Russia actually faces the possibility of losing.
If Ukraine is in the real position to launch an offensive into Crimea, that means they could do the same into Russian territory. Basically, Russia would feel vulnerable enough to justify crossing the nuke threshold. The only thing that could stop it is a last minute coup among leadership. We can dream I guess.

NATO's problem is that Russia still has nukes. NATO can only go so far before provoking a direct response.

Like it or not, nuclear weapons are a deterrece. It is what is keeping the West from getting more directly involved in Ukraine.

Provoking a response works both ways.
Ah, but the problem is, Russia won't see it as them provoking the West. And the West won't see it as provoking Russia.

See the problem? It's always on the other guy to back down.

That’s my point, Putin likely really believes the West will do nothing in the event he uses a nuclear weapon in Ukraine. What he sees as weakness with NATO’s slow response is really just the reality of having to generate consensus with 30 plus nations. I am convinced, plus Biden basically already admitted, that we would respond “in kind” to WMD use. This has to mean militarily. And they will act fast as consensus has been given and certain US forces have been put back under direct control by NATO for the first time since the Cold War.

To put this in perspective, Biden was talking about the possible use of chemical, not nuclear, weapons in Ukraine.

And the U.S. will not use chemical weapons.

I would equate to Russia losing Crimea....as losing. That said, Ukraine should focus on taking everything back pre wars borders and just concede Crimea. The time to make a point over Crimea is long gone and was in Putins eyes settled long ago when the international community and Ukraine simply did nothing. Crimea symbolically is literally to Putin like a Moscow B , I can't see him giving that up without launching wmd. The only compromise that might not invoke wmd is driving them out of Ukraine and retaking everything back along the coast and east and pray Putin doesn't panic react to the loss.

And if my grandmother had the wheels, she would have been an handcart.
Ukraine, not only is not in the position to launch such an offensive into Crimea to force Russia to respond with nukes, but Ukraine is not in the position to launch an offensive into Crimea at all.
To hope a coup in Russian leadership, or to hope that Putin each day has a new illness that forces him to leave, they are only pious illusions.

Sometimes some of you are obsessed from these nukes. Why Russia should use nuke in Ukraine? There is absolutely no need for Russia to use nukes. Also if Poland and Belarus enter the war, it would not be so sure until Russian/NATO military decides to strike conventionally into NATO/Russia territory.

At the moment, the more likely scenario in which nukes could be used (and it is more likely that NATO uses them first), is in case of closure of Suwalki corridor by Russia, and the consequent isolation of Baltic States. But that crisis is solved, at present.

This is impossible. At this point it is impossible to make this deal, that Russia will be satisfied only by the recognition of Crimea. Russia will never give up the conquered territories, except by military force. But Ukraine is not in the position to take up again them by force. Trying to do so, Ukraine is destinated to lose further territories. In Russian controlled territories, Russian flag has been hoisted, all has been Russified, even school programs and telephone operators. Furthermore, Russia has made a law in order to allow all Ukrainan citizens to have Russian citizenship, while Ukranian law severely bans double citizenships. It is absolutely clear that Russian end-state is to take all the Ukraine, by collapse of the leadership, or by force if necessary. Russia wants this. That this is right or wrong, it's an other talk than this. To hyphotize scenarios in which Russia is satisfied from recognition of Crimea, it means to be out of phase from the reality, at least of almost 5-6 months.

Once the first nuke is launched into Ukraine deterrence goes out the window IMHO.
I think Putin could pop off a few over Ukraine and NATO wouldn't get involved (so long as fallout doesn't go over NATO countries).
With regards to the "If Putin loses he'll go nuclear", I think he'll only go nuclear if there is an existential threat to Russia, i.e. Troops pushing towards Moscow. I don't see that as likely, and even if it did happen the Russian army can operate much more effectively in their own territory using their rail logistics network than outside of their country.

Then Russia is wrong and they need defeated. This is an aggressive sociopathic state that deserves no coddling
All of Russia, you can say all of Ukraine then all of Russia is also then thrown into that calculation

Wrong. This is definitly the trigger for a global nuclear exchange.

I doubt it, Ukraine is not a part of NATO, hence NATO has no obligation to get into a nuclear shoot-out with Russia if Putin nukes Ukraine.
I think what it would trigger is unparalleled support for Ukraine, but it would certainly change the world forever. Putin knows this, so I think it's a very unlikely scenario (as aforementioned, I believe this would only happen if troops were marching to Moscow).
