What the fuck is there to laugh about? I just ask... It's particularly funny the point in which I say that in the military penal code of war of each Country there are specific articles with the purpose to avoid people to flee from a mobilization or a possible mobilization, or the point in which I don't exclude that military operations could be made even in winter? you look like sour geese to me.💄💋

I downvoted you because you likened Russia to literally any other civilised country. You'd be hard pressed to find another example in the last 50 years in the West - maybe the Vietnam war and the American draft? Even then, a lot of conscripts were fighting for their country. I don't see many Russian patriots...

I laughed caused it sounded like you where trying to downplay or somehow twist it to be okay what is happening with Russia when its certainly not normal or okay.

Well, the thing is, Russian's protesting and fleeing aren't at the same level of risk as fleeing to Canada and protesting the Vietnam war. You do that in Russia, you might just be tortured to death. You get called a hippy and receive a suspended sentence in the US.

Still at level 5? Putin signaled he is going to take us all down with him unless somebody gets him first.
I understand that perception, but that is not actually what he stated in his 14 minute address. The argument Russia Dictator Putin made was he would use every weapon to protect Russian territorial integrity (his words, not mine). Regarding some anti-Russians, the Dictator's statement: "They don't even hide it when they say Russia should be destroyed" is actually true. If we want MADD or much worse Cyber War, we can advocate Dr. Stangelove tactics, but the reality is the Russia Dictator is warning the West from the Russia borders (which they consider to include Crimea.) We can debate if this is right or wrong, and our best strategy to respond, but let's debate about what he actually said. There are a significant amount of Russia public still behind him and that do feel threatened by the West.

There is no way in hell that a former General would know the specific counter move that the US would do in that scenario, also that decision falls to the President who could choose from a number of options.
Also, where's the actual statement from Mr. Hodges?
Another thing, if he did know the US counter-move, why the hell would he leak it?!
Also, we know that it's very unlikely that the West will directly involve themselves in Ukraine, even if Putin used nukes there. The described move would be an act of war and invite retaliation from the Russians.

TL;DR: I think that tweet is not true, and if it is, the General doesn't know what he's saying, and if he does, he's leaking secret information.

Please correct me if I'm wrong - I'm in the UK and was born 4 years after the war ended. I know it was unpopular but I thought it polarised society, much more than the Russian mobilisation has.
Lee - I lived through that age in USA, my cousin died in Vietnam War, and my older brother still has problems from the Vietnam War. The level of unpopularity of the Vietnam War in USA was off-the-charts. There are Russian people who actually believe their borders and territorial integrity are threatened by West in Ukraine. They may be wrong, etc., but no one believed the USA was actually threatened by Vietnam. So the Russian mobilization cannot even be a fraction of the hostility that the American draft was in USA. That is really important of context that is lost, because of the (rightful) contempt for the Russian Dictator Putin.

Some of our military analysts may want to believe differently, but history is history. The massive volume of unrest in USA from the Vietnam war, and the perception (right or wrong) that "Vietnam war had nothing to do with USA security" was widespread and grew by leaps and bounds within USA.

Just because we may despise and reject the Russian invasion of Ukraine, serious strategic analysts need to find the balance to recognize that there is a Russian view that does not have the same hostility in the Ukraine war, as the USA had in the Vietnam war.

to recognize that there is a Russian view
It's impossible. And this inability brings thermonuclear war closer every month. Not its probability. But the war itself.

A bit cynical your Post, isn't it?
Ok, there is actually a Russian View at the Conflict. As far as I can see it, its destruction, genocide, supremacism, racism, destabilization or call it what ever you want. This is the russian View that I can see day by day. But yes, that is no hostility. This is an complete cold strategic calculation over the past years from inside the Kremlin and the inner Circle of Putins Friends.

Nuclear weapon use by Russia is now higher than 50/50 IMHO. Vlad knows that the initial response will not be nuclear and will likely not target him directly. That is all he cares about right now. The question is where will they strike. Probably will target Kiev and other decision making centers. I hope I am wrong but looking more likely. The West will respond conventionally in Ukraine through a no fly zone for both planes and missiles and blockade of the Black Sea plus possible attacks on the fleet itself. By then the damage is already done. Ukraine will be in ruins as was predicted and Putin will not be punished or held accountable ever.

The real losers will be and have always been Ukrainians but at least Russia and Putin will not win which would have been worse I guess.
