They know they cannot take Keiv or to keep up the assault. Russia simply can't afford it and nothing more.
Russia could adapt in a few months to this hard economic situation and then it will be different,
I'd say NATO has to use the moment of "weakness" if it's real and send in the forces to finish this up before it's too late.

But it's wild that Russia is admitting that it was putting out disinformation.
It's just a reaction to stinging losses on the battlefield.

Russia cannot afford to lose more tanks, vehicles, planes, troops, missiles, shells, and bullets. So Russia is leaving with their tails behind their back around Keiv.

That is the only reason why they decided to pull back.

Another reality is the impact to military tactics and armor.
During the first few days of videos of the armor columns getting pounded with NLAWS I kept thinking where is the air cover.
In iraq the US did not have to deal with them. Instead they had to deal with IED’s
But it’s more than apparent that without boots out on the perimeter or air cover in a modern army conflict armor is more a target than a benefit.
I was also kind of surprised there wasn’t more crew served weapons on either side

Seems like it was all coming unfurled for Russia. Azerbaijan has made it's way into Armenia and is refusing to leave (after Russia brokered the current deal they have now). Kazakastan yesterday said they straight up refuse to go behind the iron curtain again, and regardless of what happens to Russia, they will still do their gas deals with the West. And add onto the fact that they haven't accomplished one goal in Ukraine, it makes sense to walk away.

Perhaps Putin finally learned that the Ukrainans are never going to accept Russian rule after bombing them out for over a month. But you're right, the only rational decision they can make is walk away.

I feel like we might be seeing a positive shift in the rhetoric in the Kremlin. Yesterday, Peskov stated that Russia wasn't even discussing using a nuclear weapon (of course, fwiw), in addition to stating Russia wasn't going to escalate and attack a NATO country. Now all of this resulting from the peace talks.

Grain of salt. Just an observation.

Russia has reached some of it's goals:
- the land connection to the Crimea + conquering of more lands day by day
--getting control of the Sea of Azov
-starting another refugee crisis to weaken NATO
-deterrence of NATO
-destruction of Ukraine
-preventing Ukraine to become a NATO member
-explode the price for oil and gas, selling it in rubels will weaken the dollar (starts at march 31)
-Causing an economic crisis through excessive military spending in the West.

I've got a really fucked up thought and UNLIKLY scenario...

What if they pulling away from Keiv to either nuke it or drop bio/chem weapons on them?
Nuke/Bio are extremely bad options if they wanted to unleash a WMD on Kyiv. A biological weapon would likely spread to Belarus or Russia, and nuking the capital city of Ukraine is about as batshit insane as it sounds.

Chemical weapons, maybe. But Russia could've done that at any point, since their forces weren't far into the city.

I had the same thought; Lure the west into a false sense of security then strike out. Otherwise this retreat makes Russia look flacid - and vulnerable.

Hey I did say unlikely. But doesn't mean it's not impossible. Its important to look at all possibilities and then determine which is most likly.
Well I'm fairly certain that Russia could've used chemical weapons on Kyiv without pulling their forces away from the region. They would still need their conventional forces to move in and mop up whatever is left. Of course, they can always surge their troops back to Kyiv.

Would they? If they nuked or chemically contaminat the city. What would be left to take? Might as well leave it a ghost town if they nuke it. ALSO to expensive to chemically decontaminate a whole city when your already hurting tremendously financially & militarily.

Then it also takes away a sense of Ukrainian statehood.

Well, going off the satirical caricatures of Putin it's a pretty accurate word for their performance, and now their premature climax and withdrawl. Apologies for the undertones, I have no connection to Russia but jeez I'm embarrased for them.

If the purpose is purely psychological, they wouldn't need to. I can't really rationalize why Russia would nuke Kyiv unless they REALLY wanted to make themselves the enemy of the world, so I'll focus on chemical weapons.

Chemical weapons are hardly absolute with their killing. If Russia was to use them for strategic reasons rather than psychological reasons, they would need to go in with conventional troops to mop up any Ukranian forces that were still kicking. Besides, NATO has been preparing Ukraine for a chemical attack so there is no telling how many Ukranian soldiers have been issued with gas masks.

Nukes are weapons of last resort, Russia could have cluster bombed Kyiv into rubbles already and if Ukraine had some formidable airdefense it had used it's hypersonic missiles.
I think the capital of Ukraine is the last city Russia would destroy, it would also mean that Ukraine is gone and would never become a russian puppet but a no man's land
and a future battlefield.
