It is obvious. You stop fighting. Your president goes out, without his tough guy military outfit on, but as a regular civilian and calls for a truce. You ask that no more deaths happen today, and that you will negotiate with Russia to find a solution. You tell your military to stand down. You are the stronger and bigger person.

This is not just about "war maps" and "strategies." We can forget there are actual human beings affected here.
And what would be the consequences? You negotiate a truce with Russia? And then what?

If Russia gets anything out of this war, then they are encouraged to do it again. So in effect, you've saved some lives now and cost many more lives in the future.

How many people have died in North Korea since the Korean war because North Korea wasn't stopped?

There has to be consequences or there is no incentive not to do it again.

Representative democracies need to prioritize human life.
That has obviously not been the case for a long time.

But the COVID-19 horror made it unquestionably so. Their focus on power, pride, greed continues to undermine the democratic systems themselves. Over 1,000,000 dead in USA, and for a LONG time we had 2,000-3,000 dying every single day (like February 2022) and it is a shrug to U.S. authorities. I remember 20 years ago when we were rightly horrified when 3,000 were killed on 9/11. We had ceremonies. We sang the nattional anthem. We mourned. We built monuments. Now 1 million dead is a speed bump to national capitalist progress. And as an advocate of the democractic and capitalist systems, I see that is a serious fault line. We believe fighting with one another solves these. It just makes them worse.

In Ukraine, the representative government would rather fight than win. What success is it when over 10% of your nation are now foreign refugees, and today the UN in Ukraine claims 3,381 civilians are killed (surely a fraction of the real horrific deaths which must be at least 20,000 or more). How much land was 20,000+ lives worth? How much land was worth 4 million plus refugees? How much land was worth destruction of city after city? This is not 100 years ago in WWI with soldiers fighting on horsebacks in uniforms in fields and countryside. This is urban warfare destroying city after city of Ukraine making much of country into a giant Aleppo. This is "winning" to Volodymyr Zelenskyy? I would hate to see what he thinks losing looks like.

Who in their right mind would tell its elderly and its women to fill about bottles of gasoline into Molotov cocktails and place their civilians lives in danger? The Ukraine defense leadership. How brave and responsible. Who in their right mind would not do everything possible to get a cease-fire to stop the Russian killing of civilians in urban warfare? The Ukraine leadership. What are these representatives winning for Ukraine? A nation of expats? Cities that are decimated. But Zelenskyy has his pride. He is the hero of the West against the Russian monsters. He is a world celebrity. Tell it to the Ukrainian people without families, orphans, refugees, those without homes anymore, lives or jobs anymore. Isn't it wonderful how Zelenskyy is "defending" the Ukraine (what is left) and he is "showing Russia" who is tough. Really? Not for those people who are just victims now. Oh, but the advocates for democracy can put a hacker message on TV screens in Russia. That's really going to help these innocent, helpless people.

What has his pride cost the Ukrainian nation and the innocent people who could not defend themselves? The white hot fury against the Russians is so blinding, there is little continuing concern for people, normal civilians whose lives have been made a living hell by this horrific war. For what? For some land? Who in their right mind would not have stopped this instantly, and stated wait - we will call a cease-fire and negotiate a settlement. Oh, "the West" might not like that. Because, after all, "the West" is going to bring these families back, their parents back, their children back, their homes back, their lives back, right? But "the West" has its pride too. It has to "defy" the monsters of Russia by any means necessary. But at some point going down that path, you can become just as bad or even worse, because you are supposed to have the balance of morality and conscience.

I remember here, on one discussion, I mentioned God forbid people should be shooting around a nuclear power plant. I was labeled a traitor to the Great Western War Against Monster Russia for this sanity. How I dare I make such suggestions. Lay down my weapons around a nuclear power plant? No, of course not! We should keep shooting around a nuclear power plant and defend Mother Ukraine at any cost. And literally the commenters saw nothing wrong in that. (So what if a nuke plant get blown up, as long as we get the Russians.)

But fighting at any cost is just as unbalanced aa a "foreign policy" at any cost. Such unbalance allowed the dictator Putin to rationalize this horrific invasion. So we should encourage the Ukraine people (and people in other countries) to be unbalanced as Putin. Give little old ladies Molotov cocktails. After all. "He deserves it." But "at any cost" like "by any means necessary" at some point loses touch with humanity.

If we want to defeat the horrors that Russia has inflicted, the idea that we should have the same contempt for human life does not promote our viewpoint. We have to show that we are DIFFERENT. Trying to out-Putin Putin undermines everything that we are supposed to represent. I am sorry a lot of NatSec will not get that. But in the most serious fights, you really can't win them with guns and bombs. You just have to be smarter.

This is why I said in the very beginning that there should have been a build up of troops and equipment to match the russian buildup man for man, tank for tank. "Peace through Strength" It's to late now. Now you have to get down in the mud and fight like hell at any cost if you want to retain your country. Unfortunately we are going to have to look into the nuclear abyss again because of failed foreign policy. ruusia has been doing allot of nuclear saber rattling. Nato with the US are very powerful and if the killing is going to stop we are going to have to go to the brink. MAD IMO

Bottom line as far as negotiations. There were ongoing negotiations.
Ukraine asked for return fo prewar boarders, left Crimea and breakaways open to continue negotiations
Said they would not seek to join nato In now or in the future. That they would recommit to Remain neutral,

ONLY thing they wanted was a separate agreement with other nations that would guarantee their security. Even suggested that China might be one of those nations.
No was the answer.
The issue of Crimea had to be in any peace talks. That any security guarantees would be in the peace’s settlement so that guarantees Russia would be the guarantor
It’s not a good deal by Ukrainian citizens standards.

It is not about dirt and buildings.
It’s about homes and where you live and not going back to living under an oppressive government that everyone their remembers.

If Ukraine even tries to go after Crimea, they guarantee a nuclear response from Russia. Methinks they're getting a little big for their britches and they need to focus on defending what they still have for the moment.

I agree, honestly they should stay the fk away from Crimea, at most blow the bridge. No way Putin will allow Crimea to be threatened without nuking. This is why I keep telling people attacking the interior of Russia targetting infrastructure is also a path to getting nuked. Just defend, kick them out of Ukraine and leave it at that .... if you can.

From the reading I’ve done today I don’t think that is in their plans. In early negotiations Crimea and the breakaways were not expected and could be settled through follow up negotiations. I believe they just want prewar boarders

Do the unicorns crap rainbow ice cream in your world? Because they sure don't in mine.

You say "stop fighting" as if it's no more difficult than asserting parental authority over quarreling siblings. The problem is that it requires BOTH sides to stop fighting for your pipe dream to actually work. If Zelensky were to order his military to stand down and order civilians to stop resisting, Ukraine would cease to exist as an independent country because Putin isn't playing by the same rules you are. Do you seriously think it's possible for President Zelensky to go on international television, order his troops to stop fighting, order civilians to stop fighting, ask Putin "that no more deaths happen today, and that [he] will negotiate with Russia to find a solution," and actually get a response from Putin saying, "Of course, ol' boy. You have my personal assurances that we won't kill any more Ukrainians today, and we'll participate in any negotiations in good faith."????????

You're dreaming. The world is full of bad actors, even worse than Putin on his worst day, and they do not care about actual human beings. If you were on the ground in both NYC and DC on 9/11 in any official capacity at all, then you of all people should know this.

Yes, it is absolutely tragic what is happening to civilians in Ukraine. But I've got a news flash for you, Sparky: Civilian tragedies are happening right now in China, North Korea, Rwanda, Uganda, Somalia, Thailand, and dozens of other places all over the globe. Why do you think that is? Allow me to answer that question for you: It's because homo sapiens is without a doubt the most vile of species to ever inhabit this little planet during its 4 billion year existence. It's been that way for thousands of years before we came along. It will probably be this way for another thousand after we're gone, assuming we survive that long as a species.

I've sent a prescription to your local pharmacy. It's for an extra large dose of reality. I'll warn you in advance - it's a very bitter pill to swallow.

Good luck.

That's not what their Foreign Minister just said...

OK, I"m going to put my two cents worth in here. This is targeted to ones that have had too many blue pills. Since I'm "your senior". (LOL) I"m going to give you some real doses of reality here, and I do hope that the staff leaves it in place, because I"m not going to argue with one person or start a new thread, etc. I don't play politics, I don't judge an individual.

I've read every one of those posts, as a good former investigator would do. See, I worked in the FD for a full career. Part of my career was being an investigator. Now, I'm NOT going to go into critical details, but I'll leave folks "just enough" to follow a few things. When a party mentioned NYC--yep, it struck a nerve that requires a response. Yes, I was in NYC on week two, which was total recovery phase. I've picked up the parts of bodies, fingers, legs, arms, and absolutely nothing of a complete body. So, unless the party has that tee shirt to wear and remember,, don't you even dare try to make things look all nice and rosey. Things like the things that I've seen will change you. That's reality. NO, I don't take meds, don't need any and yea, I can tell what I saw in detail without breaking down.

I'll give one easy example. I went to areas that you were not supposed to be around in. Those areas had melted steel. Now, jet fuel, even under ideal conditions does NOT burn hot enough to melt steel. It takes a certain compound that is painted on steel called thermite.

It just so happened that maintenance painted the I beams the week before. Now, put two and two together. I'm not going to say any more on that.

So, now I"m going to bring it a little close to home. The party mentioned about home invasion, etc. Well, there was a period after the tornado outbreak in 2011 in Alabama that changed the demographics of an entire county. What used to be an area that was decent, turned into a hell hole. After my first break-in or what is called B&E, naturally, that makes you a target. If you do nothing, it makes the thief even bolder. Human nature only understands a few things----strength, fear and intimidation.

Although I was hit 14 times, little did the thieves know that I was laying a trap, gathering evidence through hidden cameras, and just waiting for the opportunity for me to pounce and take care of the problem. Sure enough, after the patterns were set, it was time to lay the trap.

I made it appear that I was not at home. When he entered, I blew his ass away. Needless to say---problem solved. Did I want that to happen??? no. But, afterwards, I didn't have any more thefts taking place either.

OK, let's bring all of this stuff in perspective to the current situation over there. A bully continues to be a bully until he's either defeated or confronted in a serious matter. When Ukraine declared independence in 1991, the soviet union was falling, Bush Sr. was in charge and earlier in the year had already decimated the Iraqi army under Sadam Insane. Russia wasn't going to do anything to stop the independence, because they were in no position to even consider a counter to the push. In other words, weakness on the Russian side. Russia didn't do one thing until Crimea in 2014. Obama was president then. Well, I didn't know until recent times even as to why we are over there in the first place. When Ukraine got independence, they had to give up their nukes and the US would provide protection under a security agreement. Well, we see how that turned out. That was a very stupid agreement. So, why did Putin basically do nothing for a few years? It was because of Trump. No, they we not buddies as media tries to promote, but he both feared and respected Trump, because he knew Trump wouldn't take any shit off of Putin. Fear, intimidation and respect go a long way in human nature.

Fast forward to current. We have two weak leaders--one is obviously having mental issues, and the other is probably not in good health, with rumors of some sort of a cancer and maybe Parkinson's disease. That's not a good combination on either side, which actually can make Putin even more dangerous in some ways, because if and I say "if" his condition is serious, what does he personally have to lose?? OH, he'll be remembered, but not in a good way if he ceases to be on this earth.

The final points I'm trying to make is---all of this crap goes back several years, and it's summed up easily in one word called stupidity. Both the current incident and Crimea in 2014 has been caused by a weakness in leadership, mostly on the us side for the current, and a stupid decision back in 1991 which started in many ways what we are seeing today.

This is a broken world. We don't live in some sort of a utopia, where unicorns shit out rainbow ice cream. The thinking that I've been following in previous posts reminds me of a kid at Christmas that wanted a pony. Well, his parents put out a bunch of horse shit and hay in a vacant room in the house. The kid was elated, playing all in the hay and horse shit. After a while, his parents asked him why are you so happy?? The kid replied--well with all this hay and horse shit, there's bound to be a pony somewhere. Of course, there was no pony anywhere. Just because a person sees or thinks in a certain way doesn't show reality.

I know this is an unpopular view, but our mistakes started years ago in 1991. We have no business over there, but we have to be there due to an agreement.

I"m not going to discuss this any further. I've had my say. Before this crap is over with, in my opinion--a nuke will fly. How many? I don't know--the consequences are serious either way. Too many people have consumed the blue pill in life, and when stark reality occurs they have a real hard time in coping with it.

{Long Opinion}
So you and I have had some similar experiences. Unlike you, however, I do have to take medication to deal with my demons. You can chalk that up to me being "weak" if you wish. Congratulations on your emotional well-being.

You have one flawed premise in everything you said, and that is that the Budapest Memorandum - 1994, by the way - was a "mistake." It wasn't - at least, not in intent. Multiple countries - including Russia - agreed to provide border security guarantees to Ukraine if they gave up the nuclear weapons that the Soviet Union had deployed there. Ukraine, in fact, held the majority of the USSR's nuclear arsenal back then, so many that for the very brief time between their independence and the surrender of their nuclear weapons, they were the third most powerful nuclear-armed country on the planet. Now, I don't know about you, but I wasn't too keen on a country with very little experience in maintaining or securing nuclear weapons having enough of them to wipe out several countries. Being a student and survivor of Cold War 1.0, I celebrated those nukes going back to their original owners, who at the very least had some sense of command and control. The agreement itself was not a mistake.

The mistake occurred after Ukraine returned those weapons to Russia and nobody bothered to follow up with the Russians on whether or not they needed any assistance after such a major upheaval to their society. Why? Because we were too fucking busy patting ourselves on the backs for having "beat" the Soviet Union. And then we moved on, leaving Russia to fend for itself. Nature abhors a vacuum, and in the case of Russia, that vacuum was filled by criminals, thieves, and thugs. And nobody over here cared.

Fast forward to September 11, 2001. I'm not going to debate what happened on that day, because what happened afterward is much more significant. What was the reaction of the only hyperpower on the planet at that point in history? The invasion of two weak countries that could not withstand our "shock and awe," and - more importantly - had absolutely nothing to do with what happened on September 11th. I claimed at the time that September 11, 2001, would go down in history as the opening shot of World War III. I still think I'm right on that, but not for the same reasons I had back then.

Fast forward again to August, 2008, when the world gets its first hint of what had been festering in Moscow for 14 years when Russia invaded Georgia, a former Soviet republic. That also happened under Bush Jr.'s watch, by the way, and nothing happened. Weak leadership? Kind of pointless to debate that now, but some of us more paranoid types started keeping an eye on Russia again. And bad actors were closely watching the United States.

Fast forward yet again to 2014, when Russia "annexed" Crimea under Obama's watch, violating the very agreement they had signed to get their nuclear weapons back. Again, nothing happened. Now, some lesser paranoid people started watching Russia as well.

Fast forward once more to 2022, and all of a sudden everyone is just shocked - SHOCKED, I say - when Russia does it again, except this time it's not some small piece of land they're after; it's an entire sovereign country. And now they're threatening to use nuclear weapons if their plans are interfered with. Gee, NOBODY could have seen that coming, and now EVERYBODY is watching Russia, except it's too fucking late to do anything.

So, yeah, mistakes were made due to weak leadership. But those mistakes and that weak leadership transpired across FIVE American Presidential administrations, as well as multiple administrations in Europe. And guess what else? Americans aren't the only ones who think their elected government officials are weak. Russia, DPRK, China, Iran... there is a long list of countries with a long history of hating the United States, except now they don't fear any consequences from the US for their behavior. Why do you think we're so concerned about China making a move on Taiwain? Or Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon? Or Kim Jong Un doing something really stupid? Is it because the bad guys have gotten smarter? No, it's because the good guys have gotten dumber and weaker. And I can trace the cause of that fact all the way back to September 11, 2001, which is when this country started down the road of hyperpolitics and Americans calling other Americans traitors based solely on their voting choices.

I think you're correct that nukes will fly, and probably sooner rather than later. But if you want to know who's responsible for it when it happens, I'll tell you: It's us. Good ol' American self-righteous nationalism. THAT'S what the red pill reveals. THAT'S the dose of reality most Americans need.

And I'll discuss this till the cows come home, because if by some miracle we manage to get through this crisis without radiating a few cities, I can guarantee you that without some serious soul searching on the part of every American, the next crisis will take us over the brink. We'll have no one to blame but ourselves, and I'm not sticking my head in the sand over that extremely uncomfortable truth.

Excellent piece here. Glad someone is thinking and has not lived in an echo chamber so long that they are hesitant to tell truths.

If indeed the Ukrainian forces around Kharkiv, including the battle-hardened 92nd and 93rd Mechanized Brigades, have pushed all the way to the Russian border, they not only can prevent Russian artillery from targeting Kharkiv—they could fire their own guns at Russian staging areas on the far side of the border.

And they also would be free to pivot right and head toward Izium, 60 miles south of Kharkiv. The Russian army has 99 front-line battalion tactical groups in Ukraine. A dozen of the best BTGs slowly are advancing in fits and starts south and west past Izium.

Think of any Ukrainian brigades rolling toward Izium from the north as a hammer. The Ukrainian brigades south of Izium, including the 4th and 17th Tank Brigades and the 95th Air Assault Brigade, would be the anvil. The conditions are becoming clearer for a major Ukrainian victory.

My understanding was that Russia pulled out of the area to redeploy elsewhere. I could be wrong, though.

Exactly. You are so right. It reminds me of a gorilla beating his chest after he's done something superior. (sickening)
In my opinion, the US threw away an ideal opportunity to extend a helping hand to Russia during that period of time. ( I don't think that's blue pill thinking there) See, I visited Russia twice. In fact, the first time I went was the very first time I had ever ridden in a plane. I didn't go with a group. I went by myself. On the first trip, I didn't know the language good enough, and still can't read their alphabet, but I learned a ton of things and developed a respect (for the people) that I encountered. On the second visit, I knew more of the language, ventured out further, and frankly had a ball. This was back in 06 and 07.

I"ll share a little story. It's fun. On the first visit, I had to get to the Pulkovo airport very early, because the flight was at 0600, but the drawbridge for the canal was going to be opened for some incoming cargo ship. So, I had to get there at midnight. I was the only one there, except for the guards. After looking all around the terminal, I saw that the guards had disappeared, but it looked like the lounge was open. So, I thought I at least might be able to get a cup of coffee. All the guards were off duty, and I was the only outsider in the place. Naturally, the vodka was flowing. One of the guards knew English pretty well, so we started a conversation. I think the other ones knew English (at least some) because they were listening. We compared things, etc., just general small talk. The guard was pretty young, and at that period of time, there was a big curiosity of Americans. They even had a few shows on TV like Dallas. (Go figure)

Well, when a Russian offers a stranger a drink of Vodka, it's a sign of friendship, and if you refuse, it's an insult. I certainly didn't want to insult anyone, but I stay away from alcohol because I like it. Cigarettes got me, but I wasn't going to let alcohol get me. I have a high tolerance for alcohol, and like it, and that can make for the worst kinds of alcoholics--so that's why I stay away from it. So, they gave me a glass, filled it and then asked what I wanted as a chaser. I said, "I'll take it straight" No chaser. I could see the eyes roll all around the table. (like--"oh this is going to be good") Anyway, we toasted to friendship. They were very stunned to see that I had no reaction afterwards. One of them asked " How can you do this? with no chaser? I said, I'm an old TN guy and have you ever heard of Tennessee moonshine? They hadn't heard of moonshine.

ON my second trip over there, the guards remembered me. I told them when I was leaving, and I'd make sure and get to the airport early again. Well, this time, the manager was there. He locks up the doors for a few hours, calls in some girls, and we had our own private dancing party right there at the airport. Honestly, it was probably the most fun I had had in many years.

So, you see my general attitude towards Russia (meaning John Q public--not the government) is quite different than most Americans that have been brainwashed to hate Russians. John Q American and John Q Russian are very much alike. Most people just don't realize it--and that's not a blue pill either.
