If indeed the Ukrainian forces around Kharkiv, including the battle-hardened 92nd and 93rd Mechanized Brigades, have pushed all the way to the Russian border, they not only can prevent Russian artillery from targeting Kharkiv—they could fire their own guns at Russian staging areas on the far side of the border.

And they also would be free to pivot right and head toward Izium, 60 miles south of Kharkiv. The Russian army has 99 front-line battalion tactical groups in Ukraine. A dozen of the best BTGs slowly are advancing in fits and starts south and west past Izium.

Think of any Ukrainian brigades rolling toward Izium from the north as a hammer. The Ukrainian brigades south of Izium, including the 4th and 17th Tank Brigades and the 95th Air Assault Brigade, would be the anvil. The conditions are becoming clearer for a major Ukrainian victory.
Ukraine needs to be careful and strategic when targeting Russian territory. This isn‘t a traditional war with traditional battle practices. As much as they have every right to do it, it could be just the excuse Putin needs to declare martial law and escalate to WMDs. It could also actually work to boost morale among the Russians on the fence about fighting.

So, you see my general attitude towards Russia (meaning John Q public--not the government) is quite different than most Americans that have been brainwashed to hate Russians. John Q American and John Q Russian are very much alike. Most people just don't realize it--and that's not a blue pill either.
I think this is the case with most "enemies" of the United States. The civilian peoples of both countries have no real hatred for each other; it's all politics cooked up by the leaders and it's the civilians that pay the price. The Iranians are some of the warmest, friendliest, most welcoming people you will ever meet. It's their government that sucks. Your experience with the Russians is pretty common, actually.

The waste of resources on the global war machine is disgusting. We should be exploring the galaxy right now, not trying to find more efficient ways of destroying the planet.

It would also have the exact same morale boost with the Ukrainians. I don't know if that makes it an "even wash" or not, but the Ukrainian population sure could use something to kick their spirits up a notch or two.

While I agree there is a human nature political maxim alive and well. Nations have to have enemies to satisfy the evolutionary instinct to have something to be vigilant about.
Most people don’t think about it internationally as a rule. In the states it seems to be directed towards the “other” ideology
It’s real none the less.

Remember that UN speech Reagan gave and he mentioned how the nations of the world would react if aliens ever showed up.
Then he said something to the effect of their already here.

Anything exciting today?

Just the usual.
Russia forces seem to be losing ground in the east albeit incrementally. Resupply continues to be the key factor.
The cross boarder attacks by Ukraine seem to be focused on cross boarder supply routes.
Still contested Ukrainian airspace has failed to prevent Ukrainian ability to resupply and troop movement.
Russia’s forces are now tied to the north part of the east. Mariupol and securing once and for all the land bridge and the battle around access to the Crimean peninsula.
Russia doesn’t appear to have the logistics to disengage to move their support easily. Just like how when the flanks of an army are pressed and subsequently collapse. The entire front line of the battle will begin to roll up and collapse.

In the end, in time we will look back and realize this was just like any war where planning, logistics, targeting intel and finally choosing carefully the weakness of the enemy have been as critical to success as the ferocity of the weapons and bravery of the soldiers.

Seems that someone has been reading their Sun Tzu.
Know your enemies weakness, Draw your enemy out into untenable positions and let their own weight and appetite defeat themselves.

Well hopefully Ukraine wont take Russian territory - it could give them an "excuse" to "defend the motherland" and get Russian population behind their course. Even if they use extreme measures is my guess maybe even invoke their alliance with China? You guys think they want to lure them into their land - and do false flag operations if they dont go in?

Personally I don’t think so, they have been very good with public perception.
Trying to seize Russian territory would just validate Russia’s accusations.

Ukraine should create a “buffer” zone this time in Russia as payback for 2014. They can then hold BS referendums just like Russians did to protect Ukrainian speakers in that area.

This could weaken America resolve over Russia:
Not from me it will only increase my frustration with US energy policies.
No I know it wouldn’t make up the loss but continuing to do the contrary is just sad and completely ideologically blind

We need to help Ukraine.
Yes but if we don’t have diesel we can’t send them aid. So I would say probably take out around $1-$5 billion to reopen facilities and then send them equipment or tell companies to restrict the amount of fuel given to nations abroad to mitigate damage domestically.

We need to help Ukraine.
Sure you and I don’t disagree.
But by all means let’s continue to stifle energy production at home while we increase exports to Europe, which we need to.
Which any farm boy could have told you was a mess in the making.
Then blame it on the companies slap on Price caps and keep drilling areas constrained.
