ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey urged the United States on Monday to review its suspension of visa services after the arrest of a U.S. consulate employee sharply escalated tensions between the two NATO allies and drove Turkey’s currency and stocks lower.
On Monday the Turkish foreign ministry summoned a U.S. diplomat to urge the United States to lift the visa suspension, saying it was causing “unnecessary tensions”.
Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul said that if Washington had serious security concerns about its missions in Turkey, steps would be taken to address them.

The blame for Turkey’s ongoing visa spat with Washington lies with the United States, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, singling out U.S. Ambassador to Ankara John Bass as responsible for the situation.

“The offender in this problem is the U.S. itself,” Erdoğan said on Oct. 10 at a press conference during his official visit to Serbia

“I personally find it odd that high-level U.S. officials did not conduct any means of communication with our foreign minister on the issue,” he said.

He noted that Turkey has “nothing to discuss with the U.S. administration if its envoy in Ankara has taken the decision for the visa suspension” in diplomatic facilities in Turkey.

The ambassador is currently paying farewell visits but neither our ministers, nor the parliament speaker, nor myself have accepted these farewell visits because we do not see him as the representative of the U.S. in Turkey,” he said.

The Turkish president also questioned how “spies had infiltrated” into the U.S. Consulate, referring to the arrest of a staff member that triggered the crisis between the two NATO allies.

“How did those spies infiltrate into the U.S. Consulate? If they did not infiltrate, who put them there? No state would allow such spies that could threaten it from the inside,” Erdoğan said.

The Turkish president said that he had immediately ordered a retaliatory measure that resulted in the Turkish embassy in Washington issuing an almost identical text to the US' announcement.

"Turkey is governed by the rule of law. Above all, we are not a tribe, we are not a tribal state," he said.

Ankara summoned the US embassy's second-in-charge, asking that Washington review the decision that caused "unnecessary escalation" and "victimised" both Turkish and US citizens, a Turkish Foreign Ministry official said.

Amid the ongoing visa and arrest crisis between Ankara and Washington, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Oct. 12 that if the U.S. does not accept Turkey the way it is “then we do not need you.”

Calling on Washington to “return to reason,” Erdoğan repeated his claim that it was U.S. Ambassador to Ankara John Bass who prompted the current crisis.

“We are not a tribal state. We are the state of the Republic of Turkey and you will accept it. If you don’t, then sorry but we do not need you,” Erdoğan said, addressing a meeting of provincial governors in the capital Ankara.

“The decision taken by the U.S. Consulate and the statements made after it are not related to the truth or reality. A junta within the American bureaucracy that is related to the previous administration aims to sabotage relations between the new administration and Turkey,” he added.

Turkey does not need the European Union, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Oct. 13, one day after he used similar wording on relations with the United States amid the ongoing diplomatic crisis over visas.

“If you’re honest, make your statement and we will finish the job. We don’t need you,” Erdoğan said during an address to provincial representatives from his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Ankara.

In the speech, the president claimed that the EU has been “keeping Turkey waiting for 54 years.”

“They do not accept us. But have they put an end the process? No. They are still wasting our time. But we are being patient,” Erdoğan said.

He also slammed Brussels for not granting the right to visa-free travel to Turks in exchange for a deal to cut the migrant flow to Europe.
