Iran says it fired missiles at US warship to prevent it entering Hormuz

Iranian state media says two missiles have struck a US navy destroyer to prevent it entering the Strait of Hormuz after the warship ignored warnings to halt. The attack comes after US President Donald Trump announced a naval mission to ‘guide’ stranded ships through the strait.

CENTCOM Adm. Brad Cooper:“The cruise missiles were going after both US Navy ships, but mostly after commercial shipping. We defended both ourselves and consistent with our commitment, we defended all the commercial ships. We’ve had, drone launches against, commercial ships, all of which were defended against, consistent with our commitment. And then the small boats were all going against commercial ships, and all were sunk by Apaches and Seahawk helicopters.”

On Monday, May 4, 2026, a fire and explosion struck the Panama-flagged cargo ship HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz, and the South Korean Foreign Affairs Ministry is investigating whether an external attack caused the incident.

Iran has attacked US forces more than 10 times since the ceasefire went into effect, but that is “below the threshold” for the US to restart combat operations, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said Tuesday.

“Since the ceasefire was announced, Iran has fired at commercial vessels nine times and seized two container ships, and they’ve attacked US forces more than 10 times, all below the threshold of restarting major combat operations at this point,” he added.

“The threshold of restarting is a political decision above my pay grade.", Caine added.

CENTCOM Chief Admiral Cooper said he would not “go into details of whether the ceasefire is over or not,” and that the US was responding “specifically with the president’s direction.”
