President Tsai receives Guatemala Defense Minister Reyes:
President Tsai Ing-wen received a delegation led by Guatemalan Minister of Defense Henry Reyes at the Presidential Office Sept. 27 in Taipei City, pledging to expand the partnership across the board.

According to the president, Taiwan and Guatemala enjoy a deep friendship and close cooperation. The strong bilateral ties are evidenced by the reciprocal visits of her and President Alejandro Giammattei in April, military officer training exchanges and the launch of a Mandarin course to help Guatemalan military officers better understand Taiwan’s culture, she said.

Taiwan's 1st indigenous submarine a key step towards 'defense autonomy':
Taipei, Sept. 30 (CNA) When Huang Shu-kuang (黃曙光) sees Taiwan's first domestically built defense submarine the "Narwhal" displayed prominently on its launch platform, its bow neatly draped in the country's national flag, he knows he has accomplished the important mission of helping Taiwan take its first step toward "defense autonomy."

The first military officer to be promoted by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to the rank of admiral second class, Huang was given a clear mission by the president -- to oversee the Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS) program. In September 2021, he was appointed National Security Council advisor and designated as convener of the IDS project.

Instead of allowing freedom of speech & free flow of facts, the #PRC global information operation promotes digital authoritarianism, amplifies #Russia/#China narratives, & floods Chinese language media with #Beijing views at the cost of democracy. A great report & a must-read. JW

As invasion fears rise, China hones Taiwan blockade strategy:
As China ups the ante near Taiwan with military exercises designed to encircle the self-ruled island, Beijing may not have an invasion on its mind but rather another approach: a blockade.
The People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) increasingly frequent exercises around Taiwan, particularly its long-range deployments in the Pacific, indicate that Beijing is refining a strategy to cut the island off from the outside world and keep Taipei's potential military partners at bay.

Marines Begin Training in the Philippines as South China Sea Tensions Seethe:
The Marine Corps kicked off a joint exercise in the Philippines this week, marking the second rotation for the service's newly formed rotational force as tensions flare in the Pacific.

The Marine Rotational Force-Southeast Asia, also known as MRF-SEA, was created to better foster relations with military allies in Southeast Asia as the U.S. focuses its attention toward the Pacific and China's increasingly aggressive presence there.

US lawmaker reaffirms support for Taiwan's defense:
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The U.S. must support Taiwan to ensure its self-defense, House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chair Michael McCaul said on Wednesday (Oct. 4) at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office’s National Day celebration.

Speaking at the Twin Oaks Estate, McCaul said he is committed to making sure Taiwan gets the arms and training it needs to counter China's increasingly provocative military actions, CNA reported. Protecting Taiwan's democracy is crucial to U.S. national security and economic interests, he said.

When asked by the media if the removal of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the recent government shutdown crisis might affect security assistance to Taiwan, McCaul said it would not. He said these developments have nothing to do with American support for Taiwan.

China's Warplanes on Track To Buzz Taiwan in Record Numbers:
China's air force is poised to once again break the record for the number of warplanes it has sent across the median line, the midpoint of the Taiwan Strait that Beijing and Taipei previously tacitly agreed not to cross. China has been unilaterally ignoring this in recent years.

As Taiwan prepares for its presidential election—a contest in which relations with its giant neighbor always loom large—People's Liberation Army Air Force aircraft had crossed into Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) a total of 1,390 times in 2023 as of the end of September, according to data provided by Taiwan's Ministry of Defense. This is an increase of nearly 10 percent compared with the 1,263 incursions up to the end of September 2022 and a 43 percent rise compared with 2021.

US Warns China Cost for Blockading Taiwan to Be 'Very High':
WASHINGTON —
The United States is casting doubt on China’s willingness to launch a blockade of Taiwan as part of any effort by Beijing to take the island by force.

China’s military has staged multiple drills, most recently this past April, which state media described as efforts to simulate a possible blockade. But a top Pentagon official said Thursday that any attempt by China to carry out a blockade in real life could backfire badly.
