China unveils ‘special’ measures to boost Taiwan’s access to coastal Fujian

China will take a number of “special” policy measures to improve access for Taiwanese enterprises to Fujian province across the Taiwan Strait, the Chinese state planner has announced, under a long-term cross-strait integrated development plan. China will deepen the integrated development of the Chinese city of Xiamen and Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands, including the acceleration of gas, electricity and transportation links between the two, said Cong Liang, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, on Thursday.
China has long offered Taiwan a choice between two pathways – peace and prosperity or war and decline. China’s air force entered Taiwan’s air defence zone again on Thursday in what the democratically governed island says constitutes regular harassment.

Taiwanese government pushes back by saying that Taiwan "is not for sale" after Elon Musk claims the island is "an integral part of China that is arbitrarily not part of China", and compares it to Hawaii and the US.

Context: Musk owns a big manufacturing enterprise in China (called the Shanghai Gigafactory) which manufactures approximately 50% of all Teslas sold worldwide.

China’s Defense Minister Being Removed From Post, U.S. Officials Say

Li Shangfu, who hasn’t appeared in public since late August, is latest of several senior Chinese officials to disappear without explanation

Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu was taken away last week by authorities for questioning, according to a person close to decision making in Beijing, while U.S. officials say he is being removed from his post.
“Some of the PLA’s enduring problems may be too big for Xi to solve, and they have a real impact on the PLA’s ability to achieve what he wants them to,” a U.S. official said. “We know that corruption in the PLA runs deep enough for this to be a factor. And we know it’s had a profound effect on what they’re able to do, and how they do it.”

Harvard scholar warns of Musk cutting off Starlink to Taiwan in war:
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Given Elon Musk's pro-China statements, two experts have warned that Taiwan must fortify its satellite communication infrastructure rather than rely on the tech mogul's Starlink.

Jason Hsu, a fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, and Richard Y.K. Chen, former vice minister for policy at the Ministry of National Defense (MND) jointly published an article on Wednesday (Sept. 13) in the journal Project Syndicate to warn that Musk's pro-China stance and extensive business interests in China could potentially lead to him complying to Chinese demands to shutter Starlink in the event of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait. They warned that If Taiwan is cut off from the internet, it may have dire consequences for the world economy and financial markets.

Taiwan urges China to stop 'destructive' military activities:

TAIPEI, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Taiwan's defence ministry on Monday urged China to stop "destructive, unilateral action" after reporting a sharp rise in Chinese military activities near the island, warning such behaviour could lead to a sharp increase in tensions.

China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has in recent years regularly carried out military drills around the island as it seeks to assert its sovereignty claims and pressure Taipei.

Taiwan said it detected 103 Chinese warplanes in an apparent show of displeasure by Beijing over visits by two US officials.

#UPDATE Of the total number of warplanes detected, 40 aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait that separates the self-ruled island from China, and entered its southwest and southeast air defence identification zone (ADIZ), the statement said.
