We can't. Domestic oil is light sweet crude, but our refineries are designed for heavier sour crude. So we have to export our domestically-produced oil in order to import the oil that are refineries are designed to process. If we attempt to process our domestic oil through our domestic refineries, production drops significantly due to the wrong equipment in place, and supply would not keep up with demand.

Seems kind of short-sighted on our part, but I have yet for an administration to ask my opinion.

According to the chart I posted the US is exporting refined gasoline, not just the light sweet crude oil. I could be reading it wrong though because it talks about barrels not gallons or liters. Here is the chart again.

If I'm doing my mental math correctly, that's 300 million barrels of refined gas per year. That would have to mean they're importing heavy crude, refining it into gasoline, then exporting it again? How does that even make any sense?

The new refinery being built in Brownsville is designed for US sweet shale oil.
Decades of bad policy can’t be fixed overnight with a flip of the switch.
Let’s count and support the wins when they happen. We import the heavy crude because that was the oil policy 40 years ago and we’re stuck working with the refinery designs from that time.
