@Friendly Engineer
It’s very very hard to blow up a pressure vessel from the outside.
With enough C4 it can be done. Sure, it's hard for John Q Public, but the Russians could use a bunker buster.
The Russians could blow it up if they wanted to, although I agree they probably wouldn't.

I also agree with you that a hydrogen explosion is extremely unlikely at Zaporizhzhia NPP. In my original post, I was simply acknowledging that hydrogen explosions can happen.
The VVER-1000 reactor has a negative void co-efficient, meaning in the event of coolant system failure and water boils, the steam can't moderate the neutrons so the hotter a reactor gets the less fission events occur. It's nearly impossible it could reach temperatures for significant zirconium catalysed hydrolysis.
Zaporizhzhia has passive autocatalytic recombiners, so in the event of hydrogen escaping the hermetically sealed reactor into the containment building, the hydrogen would be removed, not allowing for a dangerous buildup.

Point being, it's not going to cause problems unless the Russians blow it up (which they probably won't)

Only a small amount of hydrogen is produced by radiolysis, to get large buildups you need high temperatures for the zirconium to produce significant amounts of hydrogen.

Sabotaging a plant will not lead to an explosion or a nuclear disaster (major).
Not with reactors of the type at Zaporizhzia.
Even causing a meltdown would be very, very, very difficult requiring the precise sabotage of a serie of critical and backup systems. It would be easier to just bomb it no stop.
Nearly Impossible in the case of a reactor in cold shutdown.
Again…talking of this type of reactors.
Different story with older BWRs.
Completely impossible with modern reactors.

Ukraine says Russia is continuing to ‘militarize’ Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

Ukraine’s defense ministry said Russia is continuing to “militarize” the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) occupied by Russian forces in southern Ukraine.
“Currently, the territory of power units No. 1, 2, 4 is actually used as a logistics and military base,” the defense ministry said in a statement Wednesday, repeating previous accusations that Ukraine has levelled at Russia, accusing it of using the nuclear plant as a military base. Russia has previously denied the claims.

The defense ministry said that firemen, armored vehicles and trucks are stationed at the nucler facility, Europe’s largest, permanently but that the number of vehicles and military personnel is constantly changing.
“Five to 20 pieces of equipment can be near each power unit during one day. The rotation takes place covertly during the curfew (from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.). All trucks are tightly sealed. There is information that they may contain ammunition and explosives,” the ministry noted, without providing further detail.

The ZNPP has frequently found itself at the center of hostilities in the war and earlier this week, the plant suffered its seventh emergency power outage since the start of the invasion, forcing the plant to rely o

I wonder how badly the world would be screaming if the US was using a nuclear. Power plant as a shield for a logistics hub.
Can someone (@Friendly Engineer 😉) chime in about the bit in the third paragraph about vehicles being stored near the units for one day. Sealed up and rotated out every 24 hours.
To me that sounds like their is a radiation exposer issue at the plant.

The occupiers are preparing large-scale provocations to create a center of radiation danger.
In the next few hours, the russists are preparing a large-scale provocation by simulating an accident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The Main Directorate of Intelligence for Ukraine has announced that the Russian Military is preparing for Large-Scale Provocation in the coming hours at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Southern Ukraine that will reportedly Simulate an “Accident” at the Plant

Well what do you know? Ukraine actually is claiming this. https://gur.gov.ua/content/okupanty...vorennia-oseredku-radiatsiinoi-nebezpeky.html

In the next few hours, the rioters are preparing a large-scale provocation by simulating an accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

For this, a strike will be carried out directly on the territory of the ZNPP. After that, an emergency leak of radioactive substances will be announced. Ukraine will traditionally be blamed for the incident.

In order to hide their actions as much as possible, the Russians disrupted the staff rotation of the permanent monitoring mission of the IAEA scheduled for today.

The purpose of this action is to provoke the international community to conduct a detailed investigation during which all hostilities will be stopped. In this way, the Rashists hope to get the desired pause, which will be used to regroup the occupation contingent and stop the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Internet was down in the region too which is a bit concerning. We have to face the reality that Ukraine will eventually launch their counter offensive in the region with more advanced weapons from the West. What Russia will do in panic when retreating does have me legitimately worried. That being said they have held off so far but we haven’t really tested them fully yet. Right now Putin can claim he achieved his land bridge. If he faces losing this last positive spin on his catastrophic mistake, our luck may just run out.

Russia has made some pretty inflammatory and hyperbolic statement’s as well. I mean which is more inflammatory. A Twitter account making claims Russia might sabotage a reactor. Or a commentator on state sponsored TV calling for nukes and the end ok all Ukrainians.
This is just all common fodder of any armed conflict. It’s just a pain in the ass to sift thru it all.

They should be okay.

Sky News blog:

‘Ukraine is planning a "dirty bomb" attack in Russia, Moscow's security agency has claimed.

Russian state-owned news agency RIA reported the news, sourcing it to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

A dirty bomb refers to a weapon that combines radioactive material, such as uranium, with conventional explosives, such as dynamite.

Russia has made a similar claim before, and it has previously been denied by Ukraine, France, the UK and the US.

No successful dirty bomb attacks have ever been recorded. ’
