Nato Members May Send Troops To Ukraine, Warns Former Alliance Chief

75% probably couldn't locate Poland on a map, let alone understand what the ramifications are if Poland goes rogue and attacks Russia. I don't see this happening until the US gives the green light.
While travelling/working for the US I lost count how many times I was told you speak good English for somebody from Austria, or gee you don't have a German accent. Continually saying Australia and I never ceased to be amazed at how many had absolutely no idea where Australia was despite it being a big solo land mass in the southern hemisphere so I sincerely believe they would not be able to find Poland.

The entrance of Polish troops into the Ukraine, if it will not automatically trig the art.5, it would led to cascade of events, like a further Russian mobilization, then a Baltic mobilization, then an UK ultimatum that if the Polish territory is hit, then they intervene. But, why should Poland send troops in Ukraine? Why they can't continue like they are doing until now? For example, why they can't pick-up 100.000 troops, then "discharge" them all from the Army, so that they are free to go in Ukraine in order to privately fight for the freedom? Russia has already prouved to accept that.

If Poland pulls that it will only be because the United States authorized it. If that happens, immediate DEFCON 4 with an option for 3 in my opinion. That will begin a whole chain of events that could rapidly spiral out of control

Most Americans couldn't find their own state on a map.

Ok, but this doesn't answer to the question. The tactic to send in Ukraine people who are formally fighters for freedom (but that were in the Army just one second before), it has been alredy used and it prouved to be usefull. So, why don't send to Ukraine a lot of weapons for the Ukranians and then "let's" that thousands of "people" of NATO nations go to Ukraine as private citizens? I don't find a real motivation in order that some NATO nations enter Ukraine formally: it will only prevent Russia to be able to pretend that nothing is happened. The only reason I find is that, in the post-war peace talks, maybe some nations want to can put on the table some thousands deads in order to can claim somewhat. Maybe. I don't think there is an actual need of further troops.

The sick fantasies here are becoming more and more. (n)🤮
I'm not speaking about what is moral, or right, I speak about the range of the possible. We live in a time in which sending troops in disguise... works. The "little green men" were invented just by Russia. Why NATO should formally send troops, when it can send "little green men"? I really don't see the advantage, if not in the said case of peace talks. But they don't say that this is the reason.

They are outside of NATO. Poland can not invoke Article 5 if they go into Ukraine and then start getting shot at.

It would be like the US invoking Article 5 during the Gulf War.
Agreed. If NATO didn’t sanction/approve it happening, the Poles would( more than likely) be on their own. NATO looks reluctant to put boots on the ground, at this point.

This according to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. I'd like to see a confirming source on that, given the gravity of such a development.
I'm with yea. I have serious doubts. West to afraid of Putins empty threats and tempertantrums.

Not to get political but doesn't help a certain political party is holding Ukraine funding hostage. If US congress can't even send aid I highly doubt troops will be then... is my point.

Maybe individual NATO nations may send troops. But doubt it. I'm sure we'd (US) stop them before it got to that point.

Can they send them under their flag instead of under the NATO blanket?

I believe we had this discussion a year ago I will have to find the thread and we can continue it there.
Found it. 👇

There where some really good discussions in this thread about that exact question:

Can they send them under their flag instead of under the NATO blanket?
I made some pretty valid points in this thread that they can try and send it under their own Banner/Flag but if they get in trouble and are attacked can still qualify for article 5 imo still dragging NATO into the mess.

OR Putin may not see it as a individual operation and consider it an attack by NATO regardless. Which is why I think we (US) will stop them from doing so.

Agreed with all of that except article 5 is for nato countries not soldiers of nato that defend a non nato country. Article 5 does not apply in this circumstance. Nato soldiers dying in non nato Ukraine.

Well, Congress won't have a say in the matter. The President can send them without Congress.

Can they send them under their flag instead of under the NATO blanket?
I guess so. I don't see Russia seeing a difference. Besides, Russia already says this is a war between them and NATO.
