And Europe are being serious, we (europe) gave to Ukraine money, tanks, Caesar motorized artillery (an artillery piece thar is greatly appreciated by Ukrainian forces and proved to be very good in battle).
So no, this isn't a fat 0, and it's normal that Europeans tries to prioritize to buy first from EU countries (when we can, ofc we're gonna buy patriots). Just like Trump tries to put America first^^ Each country defends its interest.
Also, "anything that doesn't come out of US money coffers is unacceptable", why? We aren't forced to buy american (we will for patriot tho, the EU doesn't have an equivalent a far as i know). And Trump threatening to invade the land of an EU members for sure didn't made us to want to buy american^^ So now, we are developping our industries to diversify our supply, and we're still gonna help Ukraine, regardless if it's with EU or US gear.
It's funny that you accuse EU to not help while it was Trump that did threatened to stop supplying military gear to Ukraine. Unlike the US, EU always have been here to help Ukraine without conditions, and this since the start of the full scale invasion
I appreciate the many European defence industries and their capabilities. I think though what is missing is the commitment and expenditures required by a nation to equip and field a modern army today.
Much is said about the US defense spending numbers being obscenely large.
But look at what is going on in Ukraine to date. Russia has steadfastly refused to negotiate in good faith. In fact I would say that this late spring and summer air campaign over Ukraine might rival the German bombardment of England during WW2 in terms of indiscriminate damage.
This chart shows the countries which have committed the most aid to Ukraine, by type, from January 2022 to December 2024.

This is the amount of commitment required from nations to prevail in war.
Russia has spent over 200 Billion! since their invasion started.
France has sent one SAMP/T surface-to-air missile systems (jointly with Italy).
So if European defense industries want to spool up and start building the numbers needed to fight a modern war rather than just dance on the sidelines. I’m in total support of them.
But if you don’t have the weapon systems needed then buy them from someone who does.
All that said I’ll point out from the Statista chart above Japan has contributed more than double what France has and they’re not even in the same hemisphere. And they have their own defense concerns right on their northern and western boarders compromised of three bellicose nuclear nations.
This all points to greater question. If nations are unwilling to actually invade and subdue an opponent anymore.
Especially if they are nuclear long range delivery capable.
How does either side actually hope to win this war? Just like the Cold War you spend them into oblivion. So don’t expect any quick clean military victories here for either side side. Trench warfare via the percent of GDP. While not just killing them you are also going to have to drive them into insolvency. We can’t in any realistic scenario invade or bomb Russia into submission. So we are going to have to commit now to the long term fact we’re going to have to outspend them for as many years as it takes.
Or send nato troops in now and end it, which will never happen. But would be the humane thing to do to minimize the human suffering going on. But that’s just me.
New war maxim here;
The only just war is the war that is fought with total commitment to win it as quickly and definitively as possible
I haven’t seen total commitment from but a few nato nations and yes I’m including the US in this deficiency. As a nation we have not been totally committed to it either.
A quote from a US senator who is in no way a supporter of President Trump.
Blumenthal said Trump's evolution on Russia and the war and his willingness to send more weapons, is "a remarkable shift" and reflects his frustration with Putin and his unwillingness to negotiate.
"And clearly there is a personal element," Blumenthal said, "the sense of betrayal, but also a clear understanding that Russians are mercilessly and murderously continuing to bomb and attack civilians, hospitals, homes.
So yeah Trump did pause or slow weapons systems for a short period. His intent was always very clear and very public. It was an attempt to try and deescalate the war and bring about a negotiated settlement.
In to which Putin made the greatest miscalculation of his life and political career.
Trump can sell this propaganda to the Russian people for the next three years.
“Look I tried to negotiate an end to this war. Did so in good faith…. Putin spit on it and now here we are another 200000 dead young Russian boys and your economy is ruined and terrible things have been done, terrible things
All for the vanity of one man. Well he’s your man so their you go
