Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran and Muscat are in the final stages of talks on establishing a new maritime navigation route through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the arrangement concerns shipping passage and is separate from any agreement to fully reopen or close the strait.

Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) has published this photograph purportedly showing a tanker with its aft section engulfed in flames.According to IRNA, the incident occurred northeast of Khasab, Oman, the same general area referenced in a United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) advisory issued earlier after a tanker reported hearing an explosion in close proximity to the vessel.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry denied that U.S. & Iran talks were underway or scheduled after President Donald Trump said negotiations would take place Monday and had prompted him to cancel contemplated U.S. & Israeli strikes.

Tehran said its current talks with Oman are bilateral and concern navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, including a proposed temporary two way shipping corridor. No signed agreement or implementation date has been announced.

At 20:37 UTC on August 2nd, the master of a tanker reported an explosion in close proximity approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, according to UKMTO.

The vessel and crew were reported safe. No vessel identity, damage, cause, responsible actor or weapon has been confirmed. Authorities are investigating.

Mr. Trump called Iran's leadership "unbelievably duplicitous" Monday after Iran said hours earlier it had no plans to hold direct talks with Washington, despite the U.S. leader's claim that negotiations would start today.

A cargo vessel reported being struck by an unknown projectile at 22:00 UTC on August 3rd, approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Al Khasab, Oman.

No vessel name, flag, cargo, damage, casualties, environmental impact or attribution information has been released. Authorities are investigating. The warning concerns a separate incident from the tanker explosion reported on August 2nd.

President Donald Trump said U.S. & Iran talks were underway and called them Tehran’s “last chance” to reach an agreement, later saying nothing would reach Iran without a deal or “Total Surrender.”

Iran’s last official position remained that no U.S. talks or meetings were scheduled and that its negotiations concerned maritime arrangements with Oman.

CENTCOM said the current blockade had redirected 44 commercial vessels, disabled two and boarded two as of August 3rd, but did not define the accounting period. Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei warned that U.S. warships enforcing routes outside those designated by Tehran would be treated as targets; no Iranian operational order accompanied the warning.

Six empty Saudi flagged VLCCs returning from Asia changed course in the Gulf of Aden and diverted around Africa instead of entering Bab el-Mandeb. One was identified as the Dilam.

Bahri and Saudi officials did not confirm the movements, while two trade sources assessed that security conditions drove the diversions. Routing around the Cape could add at least 25 days if the vessels subsequently cross Suez to Saudi Red Sea ports.

Despite the diversions, Kpler counted 20 vessels through Bab el-Mandeb on Monday, unchanged from Sunday. Hormuz recorded six AIS visible vessels, all using the Iranian route. AIS dark traffic was excluded from both figures.
