It seems the leaders of Britain France Germany and others also do not see a winnable war for Ukraine. That they must seek a peace deal and make hard choices.
Of course in private, not in public.
That some form of peace treaty should be negotiated in 2025, that nato support to Ukraine is not unending.

I wonder how long these leaders have held this opinion and if for a while why have they not been suggesting it sooner.

We keep repeating that Russia mustn’t win, but what does that mean? If the war goes on for long enough with this intensity, Ukraine’s losses will become unbearable,’ a senior French official said. ‘And no one believes they will be able to retrieve Crimea.'”

Talks in Jeddah resumed after coffee break. The first half lasted over 3 hours

Finally concrete steps over the end of this war are being made.
@Staff, can we resume the below thread?

US secretary of state Marco Rubio is asked if there is a deadline for Russians to respond to the 30-day interim ceasefire proposal.

“We’re going to take the offer to them,” Rubio replies. “We’re going to tell them – this is what’s on the table”.

“Ukraine is ready to stop shooting and start talking, and now it’ll be up to them to say yes or no,” he said, adding: "I hope they’re going to say yes. If they do, then I think we’ve made great progress. If they say no, then we’ll unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace here"

Rubio described the offer to the Russians as an “offer to stop the shooting”.

LONDON -- The United States and Ukraine are calling for a 30-day ceasefire, subject to the acceptance of Russia, following talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

The U.S. will also "immediately lift" its pause on intelligence sharing and "resume security assistance to Ukraine," the countries said in a joint statement.

"Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the U.S. proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation," the statement said. "The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the U.S. delegation in Jeddah, said the ceasefire proposal will be delivered to Russia "directly through multiple channels."

"The offer is to stop the shooting. The goal here is, the only way out to end this war is to negotiate out of it. There's no military solution to this war," Rubio said during remarks to reporters in Jeddah following the talks. "Before you can negotiate, you have to stop shooting at each other. And that's what [President Donald Trump] has wanted to see, and that's the commitment we got today from the Ukrainian side, their willingness to do that, obviously."

"Our hope is that the Russians will say yes," Rubio added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine "accepts this proposal and considers it a positive step."

"We are ready to take this step, and the United States must now convince Russia to do the same," he said in a statement. "If Russia agrees, the ceasefire will take effect immediately."

"Ukraine is ready for peace. Now, Russia must decide whether it is ready to end or continue the war. It is time for complete honesty," he added.

Vladimir Putin probably isn’t laughing any more

It was telegraphed even before President Trump took office: “I will end this war in Ukraine”. And he set out the negotiating strategy, something most canny negotiators do not do – unless they hold all the cards. The announcement that the Ukrainians will agree to a 30 day ceasefire in exchange for the resumption of arms supplies and intelligence sharing has now put the ball firmly in the Russian court. The telegraphed threat to them is “agree to a ceasefire or the US will arm the Ukrainians to the hilt, and you will lose”. I doubt Vladimir Putin is smiling so broadly now.
In delivering these peace deals President Trump has once more smashed the norm, involving Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, not long ago an outcast due to his alleged involvement in the demise of the Journalist Kamal Khashoggi, but now a deal clincher and hero on the world stage.

On the other hand, the UK and European allies are gathered in dismay wondering how they will navigate a world without the certainty of a US defensive umbrella. Deal maker President Trump will just shrug his shoulders and say “it’s about time you bought your own umbrella. Our priorities for defence are now in the Pacific.” He’s not wrong, though for us on this side of the Atlantic it is nevertheless an unwelcome wake up call.

HAPPENING NOW!! E5 defence ministers meet in Paris to discuss support for Ukraine.

The DefMins of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Britain are currently talking to their Ukrainian counterpart, Rustem Umerov, before another session among themselves, with Nato and the EU, later.

The E5 defense leaders are discussing security arrangements including potential European peacekeepers should a ceasefire take place..

⭕️ Trump: Our ceasefire initiative in Ukraine received positive responses.. and a Russian source: Putin is in a strong position due to progress on the ground.

🔷️ US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he had received "positive messages" regarding the ceasefire in Ukraine, saying: "The ball is now in Russia's court. We have sent envoys and hope for rapid progress."

🔷️ However, high-ranking Russian sources revealed to Reuters that President Vladimir Putin "is in a strong position due to Russia's progress on the ground," considering that any truce without guarantees could be a "trap" that would allow the United States to resume military support for Ukraine.

🔷️ For its part, Reuters quoted the Russian source as saying: "The ceasefire is just a cover for resuming US support for Ukraine, and we need at least framework guarantees from Washington." He added: "Moscow supports the truce, but without guarantees, Russia will quickly be weakened.".
