EU & South Korea security coordination is moving in parallel with EU & Japan engagement. The second EU & ROK Security and Defence Dialogue was held in Seoul, another sign that Europe’s Indo-Pacific posture is becoming more operational, not just rhetorical.
South Korea’s ROKS Dosan Ahn Chang-ho has arrived in Esquimalt, Canada after the ROK Navy’s first submarine trans Pacific voyage, a 14,000 km transit via Guam and Hawaii. The visit supports joint drills with Canada and Seoul’s bid for Ottawa’s major submarine procurement.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry published its basic plan for nuclear powered submarine development. Seoul is aiming for a domestically built, conventionally armed nuclear powered attack submarine under “Jang Bogo N,” with first launch targeted for the mid 2030s. U.S. House FY2027 NDAA draft to tighten restrictions on reducing U.S. Forces Korea below 28,500 troops.
Yonhap reports U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth called for a “balanced” wartime OPCON transfer to South Korea that respects U.S. military roles.
Seoul is reportedly aiming for transfer as early as 2028, while USFK Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson has suggested conditions could be met by no later than Q1 2029.

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense denied a report claiming U.S. Forces Korea had been excluded from a joint firepower exercise. MND said the exercise was planned from the start as a ROK led joint drill involving the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, while ROK & U.S. combined training continues under the annual training plan.

Wave of the future. Missile interceptors are too expensive and too unreliable. Hard to outrun the speed of light. Only defence is to harden the missile, but that makes it heavier and less manoeuvrable.
