Unsure what you're referring to. If you read my post closely, you will note that I did not refer to any military action - instead, I wrote "It's an interesting question how Trump might go about formally annexing Greenland - as essentially any major change in the status quo would require congressional approval." This is not an opinion - it's a statement of fact. The Territorial Clause, found in Article IV, Section 3, clause 2 of the US Constitution, grants Congress the authority "to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States." This applies even to unincorporated territories such as Guam, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Regarding statehood - again, congressional approval is required ("New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union." - Art. IV section 3). Trump cannot unilaterally declare that Greenland (or any other place) is henceforth part of the US.
If what you're referring to is my statement that the US Congress is on its way towards becoming a sham parliament, of the kind you see in dictatorships - this is indeed an opinion, and I stand by it.
There really are only two ways of going about it that I could accept.
The people in Greenland have a referendum and vote overwhelmingly for it.
Or the US pays Denmark for it.
Honestly I don’t know the feasibility of either.
Greenland gained Home Rule in 79, self rule in in 09. Denmark only controls defense, currency, and foreign affairs.
I’m not including the Home Rule and Self rule as a defense one way or the other. Just for information and perspective.
I did a search regarding whether Trump actually ever said “he doesn’t rule out taking it by force”
Goes all the way back to march where nbc journalist said he told her this on a phone call. No transcript or recording. Other main stream outlets have repeated this but none have independently verified it. Then in the fall the Atlantic ran a piece about how the US might take it by force.
They cited hypotheticals and opinions of others. But again no supporting statements given.
The most forceful one was Steven Millers recent statements. Very clearly said Greenland should be apart of the US.
Disregarded any military action to take it.
There is no denying there seems to be a full court press by the administration to acquire Greenland. They are very much using a business hostile take over technique.
Is it in the best interest of the US? It very certainly could be.
Is there any methodology that might have worked to cause Denmark to sell their territory other than this approach? Maybe but I doubt it would have survived the multi administrations needed to achieve it.
It is not some obscene thing for one nation to encourage the sale of territorial holding of another nation.
It’s certainly much more civilized that invading it.
So again an overwhelming referendum by the people of Greenland, out right purchase or ideally a combination of both.
These are the only justifiable ways forward.
