May-2026 | DRC/Uganda New Ebola Strain Outbreak

I apologize for the delay as I have been under the weather. Here is the current situation as of 10 June 2026 at 23:30 UTC:
  • The Congolese Ministry of Health reports 147 new cases, for a total of 488 confirmed cases. There are 119 suspected cases and 127 confirmed deaths. There are also 30 suspected deaths. There are currently 260 patients in isolation. There are 9 recovered patients, with a contact follow-up rate of 56.3%.
  • The Ugandan Ministry of Health reports no new cases, leaving the total at 19 confirmed cases. There are 14 imported cases and 5 locally acquired cases. There are currently 2 confirmed deaths in Uganda. 12 patients remain in isolation, while 5 have recovered.
  • The Trump administration is asking European countries to impose travel restrictions on people who have recently been in Central African countries affected by the Ebola outbreak to prevent any potential spread of the disease during the World Cup, which will start tomorrow in the United States.
  • An unnamed European Commission official says “The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control currently assesses the risk to people in Europe as very low. At this stage, exit screening in the region is deemed sufficient; there is no evidence that additional measures are needed upon entry.”
  • Mapp Biopharmaceutical has officially shipped emergency doses of the experimental monoclonal antibody therapy MBP134 to Central Africa. It is being cleared for compassionate use in high-risk individuals and exposed personnel.
My next update will be on 13 June 2026 or sooner as the situation warrants.

That delay......Absolutely no problem.
Not taking care of yourself......big problem.
Please take care!
Thank you for all your time and effort.

You're very welcome. I know that this is a fluid situation in Central and Eastern Africa, and I'm sure that there might be some members and guests who are in the affected area. What really concerns me is that Congolese officials are struggling to meet the critical target of 70% contact tracing. According to CDC models, if the 70% target is not met, chances are very low that this outbreak will remain below 10,000 cases. This will quite possibly end up rivaling the 2013-2016 West Africa epidemic if stronger measures are not implemented quickly.

I apologize again for the delay. My entire family took ill, and I've been trying to care for them. We're all recovered now.

Here is the current situation as of 19 June 2026 at 05:00 UTC:
  • The Congolese Ministry of Health reports 408 new cases, for a total of 896 confirmed cases. There are 151 suspected cases and 232 confirmed deaths. There are also 35 suspected deaths. There are currently 383 patients in isolation. There are 78 recovered patients, with a contact follow-up rate of 71.1%*.
  • The Ugandan Ministry of Health reports no new cases, leaving the total at 19 confirmed cases. There are 14 imported cases and 5 locally acquired cases. There are currently 2 confirmed deaths in Uganda. 7 patients remain in isolation, while 10 have recovered.
  • The contact tracing number reported by the Congolese Ministry of Health is somewhat suspect, as an epidemiologist from Africa CDC estimates that the number of contacts being successfully traced is closer to 15%. WHO Incident Manager Dr. Marie-Roseline Belizaire says that a "large number of cases are being missed".
  • If the lower contact tracing figure is accurate, CDC models show that more than 20,000 cases are projected. That would place this outbreak on a similar scale as the 2013-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic.
  • The Basic Reproduction Number (R0) is estimated to be between 1.31 and 1.55, the doubling time is roughly 30 days, the test positivity rate is 18.9%, and the generation interval is 6 to 12 days. These are all numbers indicative of an outbreak that continues to rage.
  • Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya says that unless the outbreak is contained soon, "it will be worse" than any Ebola outbreak before it.
  • Ugandan President Yoweri K Museveni noted the lack of any new cases in the past several days, and declared that "The measures we have put in place are working. However, we must remain vigilant."
I will be transitioning to providing weekly updates as this situation unfolds. As always, if there are any urgent updates, I will do my best to keep you informed. My next scheduled update is on 26 June 2026.

Am I wrong in reading into this at least for now it’s mostly contained to the Congo?
And thanks for the follow on.

So far, there are no new cases in Uganda, and no cases in neighboring countries such as South Sudan. It's still a bit too early to say whether this is mostly contained to the DRC, as the borders between these countries are rather porous. However, I do know that South Sudan has a very aggressive surveillance system set up to detect any possible cases in that country.
