Trump's Tariff's - Updates

No, I'm just asking for an explanation of what the slogan "Make America Great Again" means to an American.

By the way, it's not racism to want to protect the nationalist spirit of a country, like, for example, in Canada,
the two founding peoples are French-speaking and English-speaking,
and we don't want Arabs to outnumber us, the builders of the country. For the USA, it's legitimate to want to preserve English-speaking white people of European descent, who are also the builders. Unfortunately, many see this as racism.
America is a melting pot of diversity and always has been. America just wants people who come to this country to assimilate into American culture. You don't come to America and start waving the flag of the country you migrated from. There is just one national flag here.

Immigrants can be completely proud of the things in the nations they come from and allow them to continue here.

There is a long list of cultural and ethical contributions brought by immigrants to the US. It’s never that they have nothing to be proud of in their home cultures.
Be it food and customs, work ethic, loyalty. And Those cultural contributions can be integrated in to modern American life. They always have been and will continue to be.
The question always is are those differences being integrated into the nation or are used to supplant our foundations.

There are many good things from the Hispanic culture that can and do strengthen the US. Family focus, faith, work ethic by and large. These are are all things that make American stronger.
So its not about erasing their histories. It’s about are we integrating them properly.

Much is said about diversity and cultural differences. But look at history what is it societies always strive to maintain or protect. Not the highlighting of differences, disagreements.

Cultures never willingly encourage people to join them who fundamentally which to change the culture that has welcomed them.

Rather is social cohesion and sameness that all successful cultures encourage. They do this to foster stable social activities and norms.
The effort to do this is not done to stymie the society but to protect it and encourage it to work efficiently.

As opposed to encouraging and highlighting differences which almost always creates chaos and struggle in the cultural. Which makes the nation weaker and more susceptible to social strife and dysfunction.

If you come to america be proud of your culture. But be more proud that you have joined a nation that works to allow differences and yet we all work together to the same goal of protecting the plurality of this nations founding’s.

It’s a hard fine line for a nation to do. It’s even harder in a nation so large and diverse as we are.

The Irish can wave the Irish flag on st patty’s day Hispanics on cinco de mayo. These are perfectly acceptable expressions of pride.
If Jewish people wish to wave Israeli flags on oct 7 also understandable.
La Raza encouraging Mexican flags to be waved at protest to encouraging the changing of america legal or cultural norms, not so much.

Using the word European broadly in the context of people building the USA is a bit of a blanket statement. An Irishman in 1760 immigrating from Ireland first gen comparative to an Englishman coming to the Colonies with an already established family with connections are in very different class levels. I'd argue the immigrants and slaves that were exploited and actually built our national foundation deserve more recognition and preservation of culture and values than the aristocracy that lingered from the colonial era. Of course that should not diminish those who were in power and sought to use it for good, seeing the clear errors of their society. Some of our founding fathers are better than others.
Why should any culture who has migrated here receive special recognition.
Those first Englishmen who came were either fleeing religious persecution. Or were indentured servants working for early corporate consortiums for seven years to pay their passage over.
Or the scotch who settled in Appalachia and hacked life out of the blue ridge mountains. My mothers ancestors walked from Virginia to Illinois with what they could carry by horse and built a life out of nothing in the Illinois tall grass prairie.
They all suffered and lost children many were indentured servants to learn a trade.
Life was and still is very hard for all but a very few.

It’s the few who would like to pick at our differences so that we fail to recognize our sameness and lot in life.

You know it’s all how you spin a story
“Nations can avoid tariffs if they just buy US LNG” hint hint black mail or coercion!
or….
“one way for Asian nations to avoid tariffs is to impact their trade imbalances with the US is to buy American LNG and thus avoiding tariffs”

perspective or personal bias seems to have a big impact
Im not seeing a problem with this.

Yeah, I kinda did! :ROFLMAO: Still when I see pro-Israeli demonstrations I usually see American flags as well as Israeli flags. When I see pro-hamas or hizballah demonstrations the only American flags I usually see are the ones that have been torn down, stomped on, spit on and burned. Personally, I would like to see the desecration of our flag a felony, same as desecration of governmental building and property.

I agree with this completely. Be proud of your heritage, after all we all know who the true native Americans are. Wave and be proud of all the flags and banners you like but as Americans we should all unite under this flag. It should rise above all others.

F@ck him! He should buy American or at least a none communist dictatorship. So please share it far a wide. That’s the whole point of the tariffs, to coerce buyer into shifting there job killing capital flight contributions.

N.B. Walmart sucks.
as far as i understand china back then didn't need our jobs, didn't need our factories, didn't need our technology. the usa lost 90,000 factories and so many went under because of greed and corporations looking out for their bottom line. walmart was one of those that really made a impact cause small mom and pop business could send their kids to school with family money and do you think people can go to school at walmart? definitely not.

now tarrifs will have a huge impact on countries who relied on another and that is so insane to think that the factory might was supporting china and now trump has made a good decision but to not think of the impact (globally) on what this out come will bring and it is very dangerous cause it might lead to a world war. trump imposes high tarrifs-china gets pissed and blockades Taiwan-and the economy spirals out of control then really hard decisions have to be made.

Make America Great Again
It is the re-elevation of meritocracy to top of the selection pool, not identity or social theory support.
It is the rational re-evaluation of regulatory processes. While still protecting rational and scientific and environmental policies.

The legal frameworks where Pluralism in the country is tolerant to people from any background as long as they support the foundational philosophical legal, economic and religious foundations of the nation. In essence the western political heritage that founded the nation.

Where coercive or proactive legal measure are not frequently used to mold society or force change where change in the majority is not sought.

It is the rebuilding of the American industrial and manufacturing capacity not simply to reclaim some lost industrial past. But to diversify Americas economic and national security needs. Recognizing that this will be a constantly evolving process.

Coupled with this is changes of the tax system where the lowest tax brackets are protected and now as has been stated the increase in tax burden of the top percentages. All with the intention of citizens earnings be liberated from taxes and not dependent on government subsidies.

It also includes the MAHA concerns that encourage and seek health solutions in scientific research and treatments as well as basic medical and mental health common sense solution.
Including everything from the food supply and diets to free and open debate regarding all emerging medical treatments and practices.

You know common sense and not blind conformity to past accepted norms or future prescriptive measures.

MAGA is not perfect just as we now know past america icons were not perfect. It is the adherence to what works and supported by the greatest majority of the people. While also not tolerating persecution of minorities nor the proscriptive protection and subsidies of the minority.

This is my understanding of MAGA, I believe it is fairly accurate.
I also know it will not be wildly accepted by many.

Remember that prior to MAGA there was the Tea Party movement that also had wide social and racial diversity.

MAGA is not a cult of Trump,
It is a grass roots movement of Americans looking to restore the principles that helped make America a successful nation. A nation who throughout its history people of many nations have frequently sought to emigrate to to seek a dream of stability and opportunity.
It has worked in the past and it can work again.
MAGA as politicaly put is something people wanted so they can believe this country could be a real superpower again instead of being sold out beaten and abused by the globalists i mean you cant tell me you dont see the destruction of america or pimping out per say? so what do you want people to do believe that WOKEISUM or the quirks of society to take place of what use to be good for america? like family tradition, family values? if that continued any longer and the wrong president was in office this whole country would have taken a darker path.

Trumps approach is a dangerous or at a minimum disruptive. Thou that disruption aside from China is diminishing quickly.

Here is the issue of trade imbalances which have been an issue for years.
And talked around for almost as long. Now we have nations aware the US is serious and they are negotiating.
Like Ackman mentioned, the crisis is already resolved and negotiations are proceeding. They know we’re serious and everyone will negotiate from a place of understanding.

As far as chinas concerned, they can pump and dump, but when their manufacturing pipeline thin’s they too will negotiate. Even though the CCP rules with an iron fist. Few iron fist in history have Been up to the task of suppressing 1.4 billion people. They to have a tipping internally as well to be concerned with.

Here is the funny thing about the tariff vs VAT discussion.

They’re not the same except they both collect revenue on goods produced in another country which is being imported to a nation.

the definition of a tariff
A tariff is a tax imposed by one country on the goods and services imported from another country to influence it, raise revenues, or protect competitive advantages.

So in one sense when Trump says he’s going to impose tariffs to raise revenue. Everyone losses their bloody minds, this is not right or fair! Yet those same people vigorously defend other nations who use VAT as it’s simply a means with which that nation raises revenue. Yet both systems (VAT or Tariff) are imposing a revenue creating system on products and production that occurred in another nation.
When the EU charges a VAT on US imports they are in essence imposing a tax on US workers and production.

Today a tariff is “viewed” as means of punishing or coercing another nation. Yet this has not always been so. At our founding tariffs were the primary means of “taxation” to support our federal government.

A Historical Perspective On Tariffs

As a historical background, tariffs used to be a major source of government revenue. Between 1798 and 1913, they accounted for anywhere from 50% to 90% of federal revenue

https://www.forbes.com/sites/greatspeculations/2025/02/18/the-surprising-history-of-tariffs-and-their-r

Yes they can be used as a means of coercion or protectionism. But that is not universally their sole purpose.

What is really at issue though is two fundamentally different tax systems. In the US taxes are collected at the federal level thru the profitability of companies or individuals thru an income tax. It’s very complicated bordering on obtuse.

So when they export it, it is not that a tax has not already been imposed on those goods. That tax of production “VAT” is also already calculated into the distributors price to sell on the export market. They have included that tax burden into the price they’re willing to sell at. Or they will go broke. So it is not reasonable to claim that not imposing a VAT of US imports creates an unfair advantage over an importing nations domestic produces. Those imports from the US have a tax burden on them before they ever leave the US.

So no, I still see there is no defensible way to claim it’s inappropriate to tariff or VAT US imports. Both are generating revenue.

Yet somehow how it’s unreasonable or inaccurate to claim the US cannot “collect revenue” off of goods produced by another nations imports to the US.
Or that it is unfairly going to raise the cost of goods for US consumer.
As far as I can tell that is exactly what VAT charged on imports is doing to people in other nations.

So that brings us back around to the complicated issue of the two contrasting taxation systems. On the surface the VAT tax seems much more straight forward and much easier to apply.
I question though who and how are the value added amounts determined.
Is it a straight forward intrinsic value or cost of resources and labor or is it some hypothetical potential value being assessed by a gov agent.
I don’t know how it’s done overseas and it likely varies from nation to nation.

Either way for the individuals of the world VAT of tariff they are both a revenue generating schema for governments and they both add to the price consumers have to pay.

I’m sure the EU is not going to stop collecting VAT taxes on goods produced in the US. And think Europe should get used to the idea that the US is going to collect revenue on goods produced in Europe.

The question of how taxation is assessed and applied transnationally will be with us going forward.
