Ukraine needs to make a deal. What kinda of a deal?

Trying to be cute and deadly serious at the same time.
While you’re correct in the long run to some degree or the other. Based upon how Trump describe his phone call with Putin yesterday. I’m not sure Ukraine could broker any kind of deal with him right now.

When this war escalates let’s make sure we all remember who is responsible for the escalation.

Hegseth halted weapons for Ukraine despite military analysis that the aid wouldn’t jeopardize U.S. readiness

The move blindsided the State Department, Ukraine, European allies and members of Congress, who demanded an explanation from the Pentagon.

According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald J. Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a call last Friday that he was not responsible for the halt in weapons shipments to Kyiv, adding that he had directed a review of munitions stockpiles after the U.S. struck Iran’s nuclear sites last month but didn’t order the department to freeze the arms deliveries, suggesting that the move was made independently by Defense Secretary Hegseth and/or the Pentagon without the permission of the President.

More details here about the drone crash in Latvia.

An unmanned aircraft built from plywood and foam flew into NATO member Lithuania from Belarus and crashed, causing alarm before authorities determined it was not dangerous, Lithuanian officials said on Thursday.

Lithuania's defence ministry said in a statement the object appeared to be "homemade".
NATO Baltic Air Policing jets were dispatched to the area but were recalled after the object fell to the ground around 1 km (0.6 miles) from the border, armed forces spokesperson Gintautas Ciunis told a press conference.

In September last year, a Russian military drone carrying explosives likely to have been intended for use in Ukraine crashed in Latvia some 90 km (60 miles) from the border with Belarus

UK, France to Enable ‘Coordinated’ Nuclear Deterrent

“As close partners and NATO allies, the UK and France have a deep history of defense collaboration and today’s agreements take our partnership to the next level,” Starmer said in the statement.

Starmer and Macron will also on Thursday dial into a meeting of the so-called “coalition of the willing” on Ukraine, a group of countries backing the embattled nation.

I wasn't aware the UK had their own nuclear weapons. Aren't they under control of the US?

Control of England's Nuclear Weapons

Overview of Control

The United Kingdom's nuclear weapons are primarily controlled by the British government, specifically the Prime Minister. The UK maintains an independent nuclear deterrent, which is operationally managed by the Royal Navy.

Key Control Aspects

Command AuthorityThe Prime Minister has ultimate authority over the use of nuclear weapons.
Operational IndependenceBritish submarines are manned by British crews and operate independently, despite U.S. involvement.
U.S. InvolvementThe UK leases its Trident missiles from the United States, and much of the technology is U.S.-supplied.
Maintenance and TestingBritish submarines require maintenance and testing at U.S. facilities, indicating a reliance on U.S. support.

If I recall correctly, though I’m not sure if this is still the case, during the Cold War, if UK leadership were to become incapacitated during a nuclear war, the US would assume control of the UK military under NATO command, including its nuclear forces.

That may no longer be the case, but I do recall this. ONLY in the event that UK leadership becomes incapacitated or killed in a nuclear exchange would the US assume leadership and command over UK armed forces, including nuclear assets.

GPT:

✅ Partially True: Indeed, in extreme circumstances where the UK’s leadership is incapacitated, SSBN commanders may be explicitly instructed to seek U.S. direction — but only if that is what the PM decreed in their letter of last resort.

Don't trust GPT or AI. Most of the time, it doesn't know what it's talking about. Not that it's incorrect in this case.

I looked at the sources it used, as I always do. I use GPT in place of a simple Google search and nothing serious. Just more convenient then a Google search as GPT can search 50 websites in seconds and get me the most relevant sources & information I'm looking for.

Of course double, tripple check everything AI tells you. I know this... lol. In the end its way better then Google. At least the way I use it and GPT ability to search the web/internet for relevant sources & information I'm looking for. Saves a lot of time digging for sources. A LOT.

Was it Hegseth or this guy 👇

Pentagon policy chief’s rogue decisions have irked US allies and the Trump administration

Elbridge Colby spent the last several years in Washington making a name for himself as an experienced, restraint-minded foreign policy leader eager to focus the U.S. military away from Europe and toward the Indo-Pacific.

But since joining the second Trump administration as the Pentagon’s top policy chief, Colby has made a series of rapid-fire moves that have blindsided parts of the White House and frustrated several of America’s foreign allies, according to seven people familiar with the situation. All were granted anonymity to speak freely about Trump administration dynamics.
He prompted last week’s decision, first reported by POLITICO, to halt shipments of some air defense missiles to Ukraine, which caught many Trump allies and lawmakers off guard. This week, President Donald Trump said he would reverse the decision to pause the weapons but claimed he did not know who had approved it.

Colby also surprised top officials at the State Department and the National Security Council in June when he decided to review America’s submarine pact with Australia and the U.K.

“He is pissing off just about everyone I know inside the administration,” said one person familiar with the situation. “They all view him as the guy who’s going to make the U.S. do less in the world in general.”

And in conversations with defense counterparts from Britain and Japan in recent months, Colby’s hard-charging style has caused serious dustups.
The question is did Colby do it on his own? The saying of "the buck stops here" stands true to this day and Pete will take the heat for this. Hegseth was an actual trigger puller and Colby was not.

More like discussion but if you're referring to Ukraine yes, US, not really. Supportive move but nothing akin to the Biden government.
Sending missiles to strike deep in Russia is an escalation.

"A day after Trump promised new weapons for Ukraine, he warns Kyiv against striking Moscow
President Trump said Tuesday that the United States does not plan to provide long-range missiles to Ukraine as part of a new aid initiative, and he warned Kyiv against targeting Moscow."

The US's new weapon: water pistols, a thing of the past!
