Numbers mean nothing when Europe has less political will for war than the U.S. population does. Which isn’t saying much because the U.S. population has just about zero after 20 years of forever wars.
Totally true. But about Greenland, i'm kinda unsure of the will that Europe and US have to defend/take it. Both says they are gonna defend it (or take it from the USA side), but how much both side are gonna be willing to commit for it is unknown

I'm already on the record as declaring that if NATO tries to interfere with the American conquest of Greenland, the administration is mentally prepared to ditch NATO.

However - and this probably occurs to much fewer people than the previous point - I also think that if Congress tries to interfere with the American conquest of Greenland, the administration is mentally prepared to ditch Congress.

Ditching congress is literally not possible.

If people in Europe are not prepared to deploy to Ukraine to fight Russia I sincerely doubt they’d go to Greenland to fight the U.S.. again I doubt it’s going to come to that though.

But they are deploying to Greenland right now.
A small contingent of European troops has been deployed to Greenland, including 15 soldiers from France and 13 from Germany, along with contributions from Norway and Sweden. The total number of troops involved in this mission is only a few dozen.

It is not possible. The structure of our government prevents it.
As long as everyone plays by the rules. I don't want it to be possible but the armed forces report to the chief executive and not Congress. But this is wandering into territory that should be discussed in a separate thread.

Okay do you want me to rephrase? The idea is so far beyond the word of rationality, and so unlikely that it is therefore not worth considering.

Yes, good points - about playing by the rules and about derailing the thread. I'll stop pontificating on this subject (for the time being).

It's being reported as a forward deployment to pave the way towards deployment of larger forces. But yes, of course it's also a political statement.

Yeah this is completely off topic and the whole discussion turned into an episode of some kind of dark sci-fi drama.

They sent 20 some troops.
You can laugh about it, but there's something about the deaths of four (yes, four) soldiers making headline news in the US (see here) that tells me America has a big army which is effectively unusable - over fears that something bad could happen to it.

To be a good soldier, you have to love the army. To be a good commander, you have to be willing to order the death of the thing you love.

You sure that you want to offer a quote from the big loser in the US Civil War?

j/k.... just being a smart @$$

Yes, of course. If you want to make friends with Americans - particularly in this day and age - just quote that guy.

Besides, his strategies are taught at West Point to this day (they even have freakin' stained glass windows that honor him). And the South would have probably lost the Civil War a lot sooner if it weren't for him.

there is a difference between helping a country not part of EU already at war, and defending a country part of EU that is threatened

That’s inaccurate and one look at a history book proves it - the administration that has the real power of the institutions (the executive branch) simply says “Congress is illegitimate”, ignore it, and so it is. This has happened many times in history that a president has done away with a Congress or parliament.

Edit my bad didn’t read the whole thread if someone wants to split/move
