The Marine Corps' Yeonpyeong unit begins maritime gunnery training on the 5th. Yeonpyeong-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon, announced to the residents of Yeonpyeong Island via disaster emergency text message that day: " "The Yeonpyeong unit will conduct sea firing starting at 15:00 today, so residents are requested to move to the nearest evacuation center." as soon as they hear the broadcast." Communications problems

“The Reason for the Evacaution Order for Residents on Yeonpyeong Island is reportedly not because of the earlier Coast Artillery Fire by North Korea, but instead due to Radio Communications by North Korean Forces which have been Intercepted by South Korean Intelligence suggesting that they will Open-Fire against Settlements on the Island if the South Korean Military decided to Respond with Live-Fire Drills.”

SEOUL, Jan 5 (Reuters) - North Korea fired more than 200 artillery rounds into the sea on Friday near a tensely defended maritime border with South Korea, a military official said, while residents of two South Korean islands were ordered to evacuate due to an unknown "situation."

The defence ministry would not confirm if the order was prompted by the North's artillery firing or South Korean drills in response.

However, a text message sent to residents and confirmed by an island official cited "naval fire" to be conducted by South Korean troops from 3 p.m.(0600 GMT) Friday.

SEOUL, Jan 4 (Reuters) - North Korea is shaking up the way it handles relations with South Korea, enacting changes to policy and government organisations that would effectively treat the South as a separate, enemy state.
Does this really change anything in the grand scheme of things other than on paper though? Both sides effectively treat each other as separate nations, the north regularly threatens the south, and reunification talks have been largely abandoned.
