You absolutely should care. How many thousand of lives did that Gulf of Tonkin incident cost us by getting involved in a land war in Asia? Against a country that was in no way, shape or form a direct threat to the US. Politicians used the manufactured fear of the communism domino theory and a manufactured incident to justify a war that served no purpose to the American people.
As a former Marine, I would hope you would be offended by orders from a CINC that places soldiers in harms way for no valid military reason, but to profit off the war that kills them.

Well, I'm not. I'm not sure you understand the mentality of the USMC. Marines LIKE to go in harm's way. I'm sure the Marines Trump has floating around on those barges in the Middle East would love to take it to the Iranians.
By the way, there's no such thing as a former Marine. That Eagle Globe and Ancher is for life.

Trump cares about death optics too much, he won't put marines on any of the outlying islands without a massive renewed air campaign on those targets and whatever they can hit in Iran proper. It's going to create casualties regardless but I'd be willing to bet those at the DOD are pushing for a renewed air campaign against Iranian tunnels and launch sites before anything truly hits the fan.

I can't see the US putting boots on the ground in any real military capacity. Rescue was one thing. Marching on Tehran is something completely different.

I have no doubt this is true. I just don't like to see anyone dying for someone else's profit, especially someone who hasn't served themselves.

My suspicion is this had turned into a massive economic blockade.
There will be no massive invasion.
Yes ideally we’d like to see the IRGC gone and replaced with something not radical. But let’s be honest the only way that will be achieved is if the Iranian people want it.
Absent of that what is the foundational purpose of choking the life out of the IRGC. Incapacitate them enough that they are no longer able to support or materially aid terrorist activities like they have for the last 40 yr.
So while we might not remove the Ayatollah’s can we damage them enough that they are no longer a major terrorist sponsor. Not altogether gone but no longer the threat that they were.
Minimized loss of life for our military, and a defanged Iran.
Again I can see why this was done geopolitically overall. It’s risky though
