The UAE said an Iranian missile struck an ADNOC affiliated carrier transiting the Strait of Hormuz on August 8th. It reported no injuries but did not identify the vessel, cargo or damage. Iran had not responded by cutoff.

UKMTO separately reported that an unidentified vessel was struck by an unknown projectile approximately 18 nautical miles east of Khasab. An onboard fire was extinguished and the vessel and crew were safe.

It remains unclear whether the two reports describe the same incident. UKMTO did not attribute responsibility.

OFAC issued two sanctions packages targeting alleged Iranian financial networks on August 7th.

One designated the Shelbit and Aban Tether cryptocurrency exchanges, Shelbit’s founder & associated companies. The second targeted exchange houses, facilitators and shell companies in the UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore & elsewhere.

Treasury also designated an Iraqi it accused of facilitating the movement of fighters, weapons & funds for the IRGC Quds Force.

UPDATE: During the night and early morning, Iran-backed forces launched attacks towards:- Jubail, Gas facility in northern Saudi Arabia.- Jazan, oil refinery in southern Saudi Arabia.- Al Mokha port in Yemen, using 20 drones. (2-3)

As I anticipated yesterday evening, the RSAF and USAF likely expected these attacks, which may explain why 3 AWACS aircraft were airborne simultaneously, covering both northern and southern airspace sectors.The attacks likely originated from Yemen and Iraq.

The Houthis said they attacked Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery with a drone and Yemen’s Mocha port with missiles & drones, targeting Saudi troops and weapons.

Saudi Arabia confirmed a fire at the Jazan facility was extinguished without injuries but did not identify its cause. Yemeni government sources said air defenses engaged drones approaching Mocha’s commercial quay and storage area.

UPDATE: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the Saudi, Turkish, and Pakistani defense pact is technically comparable to NATO’s Article 5, but the degree, form & format of assistance would be determined through consultations.

The pact will establish a ministerial committee and Saudi based general secretariat, with operational procedures to be decided at the committee’s first meeting. Egypt was identified as a possible future member.

No public decision to invoke the pact followed the reported Jazan incident by cutoff.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran & the United States are not holding talks, although messages continue to pass through intermediaries.

Araqchi said negotiations would not begin while Washington remains in breach of the June interim agreement.

He said the Iran & Oman shipping arrangement is in its final stages but would only establish lanes for later use and would not itself reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg directed major defense contractors to submit plans within 21 days for accelerating deliveries and increasing production of critical weapons.

The Pentagon said the initiative will inform the FY2028 budget and predates the latest fighting. Public Patriot and THAAD depletion percentages have not been released.

CENTCOM separately said that, as of August 8th, it had cumulatively redirected 53 commercial vessels, disabled two, boarded two & permitted more than 30 humanitarian ships through the Iran blockade.

Tehran demands compensation from Trump to reopen Strait of Hormuz​

Iran has demanded compensation from the US as a condition to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The head of Iran’s supreme national security council, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, said the Strait will remain shut until the US meet six conditions, including ending the war and aggression against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq forever.

It comes as the US is pushing for defence companies to “dramatically” accelerate weapons production as the Iran war drains through their missile supplies, it is understood.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Iran & Oman agreed on the map for a safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, while technical issues continue to delay a joint statement.

Discussions cover safe passage monitoring, environmental protection, maritime services & crime prevention. Transit fees and revenue sharing are not yet under negotiation.

The route agreement does not itself reopen Hormuz. The latest JMIC assessment continues to rate conditions as severe, with single digit tanker movements, IRGC hailing, UAV surveillance & harassment.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian appointed former IRGC commander Mohsen Rezaei secretary of the Supreme National Security Council following Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr’s resignation.

Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei separately appointed Rezaei as his representative to the council.

Iran’s parliamentary national security commission also unanimously approved the general framework of a Hormuz management bill. Its preliminary text would authorize the government and armed forces to manage maritime security and prohibit U.S., Israeli & other designated hostile vessels.

The bill has received commission approval but has not been enacted into law.

Yemeni coast guard and government military sources said the Tanzania flagged Tihamah was attacked in the Bab el-Mandeb, killing two Pakistani crew members and one Indonesian.

Government side sources attributed the attack to the Houthis.

Separately, UKMTO confirmed an incident involving a container ship and military forces in the Gulf of Oman. Maritime security sources identified the Panama flagged Vela Nova and assessed it was struck by a missile approximately 71 nautical miles from Pakistan.

Russian specialists began returning to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear site, with five engineering personnel arriving and increasing the Russian presence to 25.

Additional personnel are expected over the next two weeks, with approximately 100 project staff targeted by autumn if security conditions permit. Work involves construction of Bushehr Units 2 & 3 and does not represent a restart milestone for operating Unit 1.

U.S. forces disabled the Panama-flagged Vela Nova after it ignored warnings and continued toward an Iranian port. An MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the vessel’s steering gear, stopping it approximately 71 nautical miles off Pakistan.

The resulting fire was extinguished and no casualties were reported. CENTCOM said its blockade enforcement has now redirected 55 vessels, disabled three and boarded two.

Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell to its lowest level in a week Tuesday, with Kpler tracking eight transits compared with approximately 130 to 140 daily passages before the war. Seven vessels entered using the Iranian route and only one exited.

Iran continues to condition reopening on an end to the war and blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and regional ceasefires. No operational reopening agreement has been announced.
